The Surface Water and Catchment Management team in our Exeter office is currently recruiting for a Graduate Flood Risk Consultant or Engineer. The team works on diverse range of pre and post planning design, including undertaking flood risk assessments, hydraulic modelling, hydrology assessments, SuDS, environmental assessments and drainage strategies for a range of private and public sector clients across the UK. As a result of current work and increased project wins, we are seeking an enthusiastic individual to work as part of the growing team delivering these projects.

Recent projects have included: 1D/2D hydraulic modelling to support a Flood Risk Assessment for a new Sewage Treatment Works access bridge in Matlock, Derbyshire; optioneering of catchment-wide flood risk management works in Rotherham, South Yorkshire; an Integrated Urban Drainage Modelling in Kingsbridge, Devon; and a Surface Water Separation scheme to resolve flooding in Exmouth, Devon.

Graduate/progression

Main duties and responsibilities

  • As a Graduate, successfully support the delivery of projects and co-ordinate with others
  • Carry out technical and other work as required on assigned projects whilst ensuring high levels of safety, quality and environmental responsibility
  • Engage in client and third party liaison successfully leading to enhanced reputation and repeat work
  • Execute site-based or office functions, liaising with clients and other contractors’ staff to collect project specific information as required by the Project Manager
  • Prepare reports, models, calculations and drawings on assigned projects
  • Carry out other duties identified in the Project Quality Plan on assigned projects
  • Have a good understanding of all relevant standards, Codes of Practice, Health & Safety Legislation and current design methods and provide general technical support to own discipline team members
  • Comply with internal management system procedures

What qualifications, experience & skills are required?

Qualifications

Essential:

  • Civil Engineering, Geography degree or similar
  • Post-graduate qualification in hydrology, flood risk or similar

Experience

Essential:

  • Experience of writing technical reports relating to a water or environmental based project
  • Experience of undertaking data management
  • Awareness of Integrated Urban Drainage Models such as InfoWorks ICM.

Desirable:

  • Experience of Integrated Urban Drainage Modelling ( Infoworks ICM).
  • Awareness of 1D/2D Hydraulic Modelling (Flood Modeller/TUFLOW)
  • Knowledge of flood risk projects for land development, regeneration and transportation
  • Understanding of health and safety legislation
  • Experience of undertaking site visits and surveys

Skills

Essential:

  • Strong analytical, critical thinking and organisational skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Good IT skills and ability of using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Ability to work well in a team
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Driving licence.
  • Experience of using GIS software packages such as ArcGIS, MapInfo, QGIS or similar
  • A good understanding of the responsibilities of water companies, lead local flood authorities and Environment Agency in relation to flood risk and drainage
  • Awareness of drainage design, assessment, and maintenance work
  • Awareness of planning, designing, and implementing SUDS
