Life as an Associate Consultant: Andy’s Story

Book open Reading time: 2 mins

Andy joined our London office as an Associate Consultant in September 2022, after completing a PhD in Chemistry at the University of Bath. Andy is now a Senior Associate Consultant.

Tell us about your journey since joining Bain and Company!

I joined in September 2022 having just finished a PhD in Chemistry at the University of Bath. I interviewed the year before in Autumn 2021, with my final round interview taking place from my flat whilst I was in travel-induced isolation. Since joining I’ve worked across a range of industries, including telecoms, chemicals and technology hardware and across training and casework I’ve had the chance to travel to Ireland, France and Germany – the trip to Germany coming in only my second week of case work!

What would be your best piece of advice for someone considering applying?

Firstly go for it, what have you got to lose! Bain has people from all sorts of backgrounds (degrees, universities and life more broadly) so whatever you’ve done before give it a go!

What would be your top tip to final year students applying to Bain?

If you get an interview, prep well, but when you get in the room; relax. Your interviewers want to see you do well and they’re not trying to trip you up. If they’re trying to suggest you think about something there’s probably a reason for it, and if you make a mistake, don’t worry about it. Show you’ve listened and are coachable by taking it on board, adjusting your answer and moving on. The odd mistake in a case study is fine if you listen to your interviewer and learn from it; I speak from experience on that!

Tell us about something that has surprised you about working at Bain?

When people say the people at Bain are great they really mean it! When recruiting I assumed it was just something to hook you in, but other Bainees will always find time to help you if you’re stuck, ensure you’re always learning and make sure that even when working hard we are having fun! Everyone around the office really are the best bit of Bain.
