About North Yorkshire Council

North Yorkshire Council is responsible for delivering a wide range of local government services across England's largest rural county.

We're responsible for education, social care, health, highways, libraries, trading standards and household waste recycling centres as well as hundreds of other services to a population of circa 600,000 residents. Our residents are represented by 72 elected members and the council is Conservative controlled.

We are on a journey of change and modernisation over the next five years, changing the ways that we engage with the public and the ways that we work with communities in general.

Whilst the challenges ahead are not to be under-estimated, there will be positive opportunities to be more efficient, to do many things better and smarter than we have before and ways of working that are better for our service areas. As we shape the organisation of the future, we will do so around core principles including:

  • Putting customers at the heart of all we do
  • Enabling stronger communities
  • Working in partnership
  • Ensuring value for money
  • Valuing and investing in staff
  • Being an innovative and learning organisation

We've got over 20,000 members of staff who work in a wide range of roles and we are one of North Yorkshire's leading employers.
