As an Assistant Electrical Designer, you will assist in the preparation of project documentation working on live substation projects under the guidance of senior engineers. Working for clients such as National Grid, Scottish Power, and Scottish & Southern Energy amongst many, you will be responsible in part for the production of much of the project documentation. As a valued member of the design team, you’ll have the chance to work on some major infrastructure projects up and down the country. Working on major substation connection projects both AIS & GIS you’ll be directly involved in the design process, contributing to the success of the business.

What you'll do 

  • Assist in preparing engineering drawings from rough sketches or from general engineering and design information (verbal instructions and notes) using CAD, both 2D AutoCAD & 3D AutoCAD Revit / BIM (Building Information Management) software programs.
  • Assist in the surveying of new and existing substation sites using Matter port 3D scanner technology. Using these scans to assist in the substation design process to ensure accurate electrical arrangements.
  • Assist in the production of site layout plans, substation elevation details, equipment GA’s, above & below ground earthing layouts, connector arrangements, interlocking philosophies amongst many others.
  • Where necessary and under supervision from a senior engineer produce and review busbar short circuit calculations
  • Liaise with other disciplines to ensure continuity of design across Primary and Civil engineering documents. In particular, but not limited to review of equipment support structures, foundation details and ducting arrangements.
  • Aiding in the development of substation arrangements in line with single line diagrams (SLD’s)
  • Where necessary and with supervision from a senior engineer, review supplier documentation, checking for compliance to specification. Ensuring that what we order is fit for purpose, and suitable for installation into the proposed location.
  • Assist with the execution of changes to designs or sketches and mark-ups on ongoing projects and assist in assessing the implication of those changes on timescales and project cost.
  • Assist with the analysis of reports, drawings, and tests to plan and design projects.
  • Familiarize yourself with all relevant specifications / guidance notes / engineering policies necessary to delivery your element of substation work.
  • Work under the guidance of senior engineers on a range of HV substation engineering topics, such as high voltage underground cable design, high level electrical busbar arrangements and subsequent calculations, review of above & below ground earthing arrangements etc…
  • Working collaboratively with others including, but not limited to Project Managers, BIM Managers, Engineers, and Designers throughout the company in a multi-discipline project team environment to resolve design or drawing issues as appropriate and to accomplish objectives using BIM models.
  • Maintain an overview of developments in CAD/BIM technologies, relevant BIM standards and Codes of Practice.
  • Organize and maintain all revisions of project drawings, plot files and project-related information are stored in a logical and well-structural manner.
  • Assist is maintaining compliance to CDM regulations, and all other legal and regulatory requirements associated with electrical system design.
  • Demonstrate creativity, foresight, and judgement in anticipating and solving problems.

There will be elements of work that require site visits, and whilst this position is office based you will have the opportunity to visit live substation projects prior to and during the construction phase. All necessary training and authorizations will be provided.

You will be given the opportunity to work on some of the largest substation infrastructure projects currently underway in the United Kingdom, connecting many generator facilities to the National Grid.

Minimum qualifications / requirements

  • HNC / HND Electrical engineering, Engineering or Construction technology or working towards a similar qualification.
  • Basic ability to understand & utilize both 2D and 3D applications such as to prepare engineering drawings.
  • Basic knowledge in the theory and practices of assigned discipline; competent in the fundamental concepts of other disciplines as they relate to the assigned discipline; and capable of operating related discipline design software necessary to execute production tasks.
  • Good written & verbal communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and attention to detail.

Desirable (but not essential)

  • Basic understanding of design software such as: AutoCAD, Revit, and Excel to develop the design deliverables. Ability to learn and effectively utilize new design software programs.
  • Understanding of Navisworks and Dynamo.
  • Basic knowledge of BIM 360 and Autodesk Construction Cloud.
  • Basic knowledge of BS1192 & ISO19650 relevant standards and guidance associated with delivering in a BIM level 2 environment.
  • Basic knowledge of BIM Standards and industry guidance in relation to electronic output
