Newcastle University is a great place to work, with excellent benefits. We have a generous holiday package; plus the opportunity to buy more, great pension schemes and a number of health and wellbeing initiatives to support you.

The role

We are excited to invite applications for a Research Assistant/Associate in experimental fluid mechanics. We are keen to hear from those of you who have an interest in the broad field of fluid mechanics. You will join a diverse community of colleagues based in the School of Mathematics, Statistics & Physics at Newcastle and will have access to our fluids laboratory housed in our newly renovated Stephenson Building. The position is funded through a Leverhulme Research Project Grant and includes a generous allowance for travel, training, and dissemination activities. The project will be supervised by Dr Magda Carr at Newcastle University and will involve collaboration with colleagues at the University of Bath, Loughborough University, Penn State University, the University of Waterloo and the New Jersey Institute of Technology. The project will investigate mode-2 internal solitary waves and involve a combination of laboratory-based research and numerical modelling.

You will play a key role in performing the laboratory experiments, visualising, and measuring fluid flow, processing data, developing numerical simulations, and working as part of the wider team involved in the investigation. You will get the opportunity to collaborate with leading academics in the field and be encouraged to travel and disseminate your findings through conference participation and Journal publications.

The role is full time, fixed term for a period of 30 months and the anticipated start date of 1 June 2024 is negotiable.

You will be supervised by Dr Magda Carr at Newcastle University and in addition will work closely with co-investigators Dr Ricardo Barros (Loughborough University) and Prof Paul Milewski (University of Bath & Penn State University).

This opportunity presents you with the following prospects:

  • The opportunity to collaborate with world-leading academic experts on stably stratified flows, in the field of internal waves
  • The opportunity to work in a cross-disciplinary team utilising a range of techniques including experiments, numerical modelling, and applied mathematics
  • Publishing research in high quality journals and presenting papers at international conferences

Please contact Dr Magda Carr at magda.carr@newcastle.ac.uk if you would like to discuss the opportunity further.

To apply please upload a CV and a letter of application which outlines how you can evidence the knowledge, skills and experience required in the person specification below.

Key accountabilities

  • Conduct experimental research in the field of mode-2 internal solitary waves
  • Conduct numerical simulations in the field of mode-2 internal solitary waves
  • Manage research work and the efficient use of resources
  • Manage various research activities simultaneously
  • Ensure project plans are completed and reviewed
  • Monitor project progress and deliver results within given schedules
  • Provide regular research project performance update reports to the project team

  • Ability to work in collaboration with a multi-disciplinary team
  • Experience of, or exposure to article publications in high profile journals
  • Experience of, or exposure to the dissemination of research outputs to a range of audiences in a variety of formats and settings (e.g. peers, students, public; journal papers, conferences and web material)

Desirable

  • Good understanding of experimental fluid dynamics including particle image velocimetry
  • Good understanding of numerical computation of fluid dynamics including high-performance computing
