The University of Cambridge wishes to appoint an Animal Models Technician to join the Mitochondrial Biology Unit's core services team supporting the Animal Models Technical Manager. This is a permanent position starting on 01 June 2024, with funding secured until 31 March 2027.

About the team

The MRC Mitochondrial Biology Unit is a world-renowned centre for research in respiratory enzymes.

The role

The role holder will provide technical support for the Unit's research activity relating to animal models. This role offers an insight into the generation and phenotyping of preclinical mouse models for mitochondrial disease and the opportunity to work with a variety of projects across mitochondrial function in health and disease.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide support for research projects through routine animal husbandry (breeding, weighing, welfare checks, sampling), tissue collection (live biopsies and postmortem sample collection), genotyping (DNA extraction and DNA sequencing).
  • Keep the Animal Models Technical Manager updated on progress and resolve issues in consultation with her.
  • Perform experiments involving aseptic cell culture technique.
  • Accurate record keeping to assist the colony manager in stock levels and routine procedures.
  • Maintenance and running of the research laboratory. Ensure the laboratory has adequate stocks of sterile media, disposables and equipment.
  • Dispose of biological waste in liaison with the University Safety Office and the disposal contractors. Keep records of waste disposal, assist with dealing with emergencies e.g. report lab issues or problems to the Animal Models Technical Manager and work to resolve them.

About you

  • The successful candidate will have a BSc in Molecular Biology, Physiology, Biochemistry, or related discipline.
