Graduate insight into working at Lloyds Banking Group

Created on 15 Sep 2021

We recently caught up with Fanni about how she secured an opportunity with Lloyds Banking Group and how Bright Network helped her secured the role.

Why did you choose Lloyds Banking Group?

I was impressed by LBG's reputation and its significance in the UK market so I applied to their internship. Unfortunately, in the summer of 2020, the programme had to be cancelled, but I was fascinated by how well LBG handled this situation. They were keeping in touch with those who would have been successful applicants and fast-tracked us to the assessment centre of the 2021 graduate scheme. Ever since then, everyone that I have met from the organisation seems extremely nice and welcoming and this gives me reassurance that I made the right decision by choosing LBG.

What can I expect if I apply to Lloyds Banking Group?

You can find all the important information on their website, but there is initially an online form and some online tests to submit. The second stage is a job insight assessment and then finally a day-long assessment. The final stage can be a bit exhausting, but everyone you meet is really nice and wants to get the best out of you. There are some shorter exercises, a longer 1-to-1 interview, a numerical exercise and a group exercise. It is crucial to separate the different parts of the day; even if you feel that you could have done better on the interview for example, still try to provide your best during the rest of the day and do not let the previous experience influence you.

What do you think are the biggest challenges LBG is going to face in the future?

I would recommend you do your research about the bank and try to broadly understand the industry and some global trends. Doing your research and having commercial awareness is essential to show that you are really enthusiastic about the job, but remember that you are applying to an entry-level position so you are not expected to have very specific or technical knowledge.

What three tips would you give to Bright Network members to follow in your footsteps?

  1. Be very persistent when applying to jobs and have faith in yourself.
  2. Be honest and authentic in all stages of your applications - this way you'll find a good match!
  3. Always try to smile during your interviews and show enthusiasm for the company.

Did Bright Network help you in your career journey? If so, how?

Bright Network is a great place that brings together lots of great career opportunities. I used it a lot to discover new companies – what do they do and what roles do they offer. It can also help you to find great events that help you understand your options better. I also attended the Bright Network FESTIVAL twice, which was a great way to kick-start the application season and get to know employers.
