Preparation is key when it comes to securing a spot at Reed Smith. In this article, they give key insight and advice for when you are preparing for each stage in the application process, giving you the best chance at success.

Application Overview

There are four key steps on our application process:

Online application form

You application form should contain the following:

Academics – clear breakdown of grades.

Work experience – Detail your most relevant. You can include open days to highlight your legal work experience.

Activities and interests – Explain the activity/interest, your role, your contribution and what you have gained from it.

Situational strengths test

The key objective is hiring people with the precise, natural strengths and motivators that are central to carrying out the job.

The aim is to recruit people who can demonstrate the ability to achieve key strengths and have a natural passion and desire to do the job.

Ultimately – it is about finding square pegs for square holes.

Career focus questions

These questions are designed to test your research & analysis and commercial awareness skills.
Research the firm thoroughly using a number of sources and plan your answer thoroughly.

Commercial Awareness

Put simply:

  • Staying up to date with daily developments in business and the commercial world.
  • Why is this important?
  • When entering the world of business its important to understand the link between industries, cities and regions.

Case study and strengths interview

8 work related scenarios: You will be handed 8 case studies to solve   

5 options: For each case study you will be given 5 possible responses which you must order from most to least relevant

Untimed: Take your time to read each response carefully

How to succeed

  • Reflect on your strengths and what you can bring to the role
  • Research the firm and motivations for wanting to work there
  • Remember we are looking to see what energises you
  • No right or wrong answer
  • Don’t fake it, be yourself
  • Show personality
