Philippa Rowe joined the Deloitte graduate scheme straight after graduating from Exeter University with a degree in Latin and French. Read on to find out why you don’t need a specific degree to build an excellent career at Deloitte.
I studied Latin and French at university and was surprised to discover I didn’t need a Business, Accounting or Maths degree to apply for a role at a ‘Big Four’ professional services firm. Deloitte want to work with a blank canvas – teaching you their way of working while helping you to fulfil your potential.
You learn everything you need to know about chartered accountancy on the job and through a professional qualification. I’m currently training for the globally-recognised ACA qualification which involves 15 exams and three years of work experience.
More than numbers
Everyone thinks auditing is just trawling through numbers – even I did before I joined Deloitte. I didn’t realise I would be reviewing companies’ accounts and checking everything is above board - from financial statements to corporate social responsibility initiatives.
I haven’t yet dealt with a case of fraud but errors do happen in firms’ accounts and we need to ensure they are aware of these mistakes. It’s fascinating to see how these companies operate financially – it sometimes feels like we’re investigators.
I also do advisory work which is what I imagine a lot of people consider consulting. I spend time with a client’s business, learn their methods and advise on particular changes to ensure they’re adhering to regulations (especially since the financial crash in 2008). When a client tells you how much they appreciate your work as it’s a service they can’t perform themselves, I really feel like I am making a difference.
The best thing about Deloitte is definitely its people. Some of my best friends are colleagues and I’m part of a great team. There’s a real collegial feel – almost like an extension of university. I think it’s to do with the fact we’re all natural high achievers and no one sees their role as a nine to five. We’re all building a career with Deloitte.
I’m also involved with graduate recruitment and get to attend careers events. It’s really exciting to meet enthusiastic and talented candidates who want to join Deloitte. I love that I can honestly tell them how brilliant it is to work here.
There are so many excellent opportunities at Deloitte, especially when it comes to international placements. Lots of colleagues have relocated to Australia and I’m actually about to start an 18 month secondment in Vancouver. I’m particularly excited about the skiing! Deloitte really cares about its people - my partner also works here and they have organised for us to go out to Canada together.
