C. HOARE & CO. is Britain’s oldest private bank. It was founded in 1672 when Richard Hoare started trading at the sign of the Golden Bottle in London’s Cheapside and has, for eleven generations, been owned and run by the Hoare family.
The partners manage C. Hoare & Co. with unlimited liability, motivated by a distinctive family culture and long-held values of honesty, empathy and social responsibility. A conservative attitude to risk means that the bank is always liquid and well capitalised, while the bank’s wealth of experience – combined with exceptional customer service and nimble decision making – makes it stand out from its competitors. The small size of the bank – with two offices in London and one in Cambridge – supports a personal approach.
The bank has weathered three and a half centuries of change. It has witnessed the establishment of the Bank of England, the introduction of income tax and the global financial crisis, and embraced innovations in banking from the cheque book to the mobile App and the possibilities of fintech.
C. Hoare & Co. recognises that customers’ needs are constantly evolving, and its customer base includes landed estate owners, entrepreneurs and philanthropists, as well as professional individuals and family businesses. The bank’s own philanthropic initiatives are supported through its charitable trust, The Golden Bottle Trust, which receives a percentage of annual profits and maintains a long tradition of social impact.
