We caught up with Becky, a Vacation Scheme student at Covington. Here she discusses what made her choose Covington, the company culture and the favourite parts of her role.
Tell us a bit about yourself and your journey into law
I studied Law at King’s College London. In my second year, I applied for a vacation scheme at Covington & Burling. After an immersive two weeks at the firm, I was offered a training contract.
What stood out to you about Covington?
Unlike other firms, Covington focuses on life sciences, technology and corporate matters. This focus has allowed Covington to carve out their territory in the legal sector as leaders in these areas. This means the work you can expect at Covington often involves industry leaders and an innovative approach to legal practice.
What is the culture like at the firm?
The firm’s niche in dynamic areas of legal practice attracts lawyers who have an authentic interest in their practice areas. This fuels a genuinely collaborative culture where lawyers across the firm are happy to work across departments.
What would be your top tip to members going through the application process?
Covington’s application process offers the scope to show what makes you tick as a person. Having a particular interest or passion not only marks you out as an interesting person to work with but shows your capacity for dedication in a given area. Whether or not this interest is related to law, this can highlight you as a worthy candidate!
What’s your favourite aspect of your role at Covington?
As a vacation scheme student, every effort is made to ensure you experience the breadth of the firm's practice. I was able to sit in two different departments, as well as completing a project in a different practice area. The effort made to give guidance and detailed feedback on the project meant I managed to gain practical experience across a greater range of practice areas than other schemes.
Did Bright Network help you secure this role and, if so, how?
My first exposure to Covington was at the 2018 Bright Network Future Top 100 Lawyers Event during the speed networking session. Interacting with people from the firm gave me an enduring first impression of the Covington's culture of warmth and collaboration, a culture which I felt I could be a part of in the future.
My selection to attend the 2018 Future Top 100 Lawyers event was incredibly empowering. The Bright Network continually reinforces the message that people from all backgrounds can access vacation schemes and training contracts at the top law firms in London, this event was no exception. I was selected to be an alumni ‘success story’ speaker at the next annual instalment of the event, having recently secured a training contract with Covington and Burling. Joining the Bright Network was pivotal in my success in securing a training contract at Covington & Burling.
