How do you build those human connections during a virtual internship? For intern Jonny at Jardines, he found plenty of opportunities to get to know his fellow interns and managed to fit in a good chat with our senior leaders. Check out the pictures to see the real-life connections he made.
07:30 - Daily huddle with colleagues
We have a daily meeting with all the interns and Group HR for everyone to check-in, ask any questions and receive information. This a useful, informal opportunity to ask questions, as well as to hear more from the other interns. During today’s huddle we were set a group project on sustainability. Like many other young people, sustainability is very important to me, so I appreciate that Jardines also places so much emphasis on sustainability and wants to hear our suggestions.
08:30 – Virtual design-focused training session
All the interns attended training sessions on human centred design with training provider Hyper Island. Having never formally learnt about design, this was an eye-opening experience. I found ideas such as surfacing emotional and social needs in addition to functional ones, creating personas and focusing on empathy, not just creativity in the design process particularly interesting. I’m really looking forward to applying these ideas further with my team on our innovation project!
10:00 – Chat with Group Managing Director
We had a session with Group Managing Director John Witt who told us more about his varied career within Jardines, as well as his current role as Managing Director. One of the main reasons Jardines appeals to me is the diverse range of businesses it is involved in, so it was inspiring to hear about John’s wide variety of experiences at Jardines, ranging from car dealerships to luxury hotels. It was also very interesting to hear John’s views on how Jardines should move forwards, as well as the emphasis he placed on innovation and entrepreneurial spirit.
11:15 - Innovation project meeting
I met with my innovation project team to discuss potential target customers and personas for our innovation project. Our project is to find a solution to help Jardine International Motors (JIM) to provide value to Generation Z consumers. I really enjoy working in such a diverse team (our group of five is made up of people based in Mainland China, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Switzerland and the UK) as this means everybody brings different perspectives and experiences.
14:00 - Coffee break
I took a mid-morning coffee break between meetings. I like to have a short break in the morning so I appreciate that the schedule always allows for this. Sometimes I use Whil (a wellness app which Jardines gave all the interns access to) to do a brief mindfulness exercise or take the chance to reply to some messages for a group project.
