Lloyds Banking Group - Application Advice

Read about Top Tips & advice for applying for Lloyds Banking Group Graduates and Intern courses from the experiences of successful past applicants.

Here are a few pointers for those of you who are looking to or thinking about applying for a Graduate Leadership Programme or an Internship with one of the biggest banking groups in the UK. These pieces of advice come straight from previously successful graduates.

Do your research

This is good as a general rule of thumb for applying for any job, but no matter what the company, look up potentially important information about them. What is the company’s history? What other companies are they associated with? Living in the golden age of technology there is not a real reason for you not to be up to date of the latest information about the company you are applying for. The more information you know ahead of the interview the better you are to stand out from others who may not be as clued up as you.

Take every opportunity you can

Learn new skills, challenge yourself and stretch your comfort zone. If you make a mistake, learn from it and move on. You’ll never progress in any company if you’re not afraid to take a few risks and see where they take you. It’s better to try and fail than to never try at all.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions

Asking questions is the best way to learn any piece of information. Everyone comes from a different background and has gaps in their knowledge so make sure that you are not embarrassed about asking a potentially ‘silly’ question. It’s better to ask and get an answer than to stay where you are and struggle. Just think that the more questions you ask, the more you’re learning. Lloyds Banking Group are willing to invest lots of time in you and help with your training and development so make sure you take full advantage of that.

Keep in touch with your network

Always good to have in your arsenal are people who you meet along the way who may be able help in one way or another. Some contacts can help your research, some may be able to give help you with your career choices and to make career decisions. Also make sure you give back to the people who do help you.

Put the effort in

Be enthusiastic and passionate about what you want to do. Lloyds Banking Group prides itself on putting customers first and helping Britain prosper and is actively looking for people who are motivated to do the same.

Be yourself

Applying for any job can be scary, but you’ve got to remember that they want to hire you. They’re looking for people with motivation and the relevant values, skills and potential to best fit the roles and the company. What will make you stand out is showing your motivation for the role you are applying for, being friendly, curious and confident – but not arrogant! - in sharing your accomplishments. Most important is to be yourself and try to not let your nerves get in the way of showing-off what you have to offer.
