Meet Bradley, Assistant Underwriter at QBE Insurance

Please can you introduce yourself and your role at QBE
My name is Bradley Thorn, and I am an Assistant Underwriter within the Major Risk Property team, operating in the London Market. I have been with QBE since October 2023 and joined as a UA, where I was supporting the Major Risk, London South East and Real Estate team.
What did you enjoy most about the UA role?
The great part about being a UA is every case you work on will be different in some respect. One day you may be providing pricing support on a Multinational, Global Retailer, whereas the next you could be looking at a National Metal Works firm. Working on such an array of differing cases allows you to develop your market knowledge and become a real asset to the team. You also get to work closely with the Underwriters within your team, who are all more than happy to answer any questions you have and give you insights into the risks you are supporting them on.
What achievement would you say you’re most proud of since working at QBE?
Since joining QBE in October 2023 I have received 2 promotions, the first being a promotion to Senior Underwriting Assistant. Recently, I was promoted to an Assistant Underwriter. This is one of the great things about QBE, if you work hard and apply yourself, the opportunities to grow your career and be rewarded are most certainly there.
What did a typical day as a UA look like for you?
A typical day as a UA in the Property team would involve a variety of tasks and not each day would look the same. One day, you may find yourself deep in pricing work, helping Underwriters to get data into our pricing tool accurately to ensure best results. Other days, you could be assisting the processing and booking of bound risks into our systems. There’s a lot more that you’ll get exposure to, such as claims, raising surveys, conducting compliance checks, etc.
What would be your advice to someone considering applying for an UA with us?
Make sure you have an interest in the Insurance industry and QBE, being able to demonstrate this in an interview is key. Our QBE DNA underpins everything we do on a day-to-day basis, so ensure you are familiar with this and try to think of examples where you can link it to your own experience.
