Meet Joseph Davis, Trainee Solicitor at Taylor Wessing. Read on to find out what it's like to work at Taylor Wessing and what has surprised Joseph about the firm.
Why did you pick Taylor Wessing?
I picked Taylor Wessing because I was interested in the sectors it focuses on. I was attracted to the idea of working for clients in constantly evolving sectors such as energy, telecoms, media and life sciences. I also carried out a vacation scheme at Taylor Wessing during the summer after my second year at university and this confirmed that Taylor Wessing was the firm for me. I was able to see the everyday life at the firm and found it to be a great place to work.
What skills or experiences at university best prepared you for your career at Taylor Wessing?
Time management is key in law, and I believe that long tasks at university prepared me for this. Whereas tasks often require urgent attention, it is usually the long running jobs which are most difficult to keep on top of. Completing large essays over a long period of time allowed me to develop the skills required to manage my time well for such tasks.
What has surprised you about your role or the firm, since joining Taylor Wessing?
I have been pleasantly surprised by the early responsibility given to trainees at Taylor Wessing. In my first seat in Corporate Finance I got a significant amount of client contact and was able to feel like I was really making a difference. Such responsibility is something that all firms talk about giving, but I did not expect this to be proved true so early on in my training contract.
There is a strong sense that you are part of a team and that everyone is happy to work together in order to get the job done.
How would you describe the culture and working environment?
The culture at Taylor Wessing is very friendly and collaborative. There is a strong sense that you are part of a team and that everyone is happy to work together in order to get the job done. There is no face time culture at the firm, and whilst everyone is expected to work hard to get the job done there is no expectation that you have to be in the office for any longer than is required. There are also a wide array of extra-curricular activities, from yoga to volunteering at local schools, which help develop the culture at the firm.
Tell us about an average day at Taylor Wessing
There isn't really such a thing as an average day at Taylor Wessing. Typically I get into the office around 8.30am to give myself some time to go through my emails and sort out any administrative tasks before the day really gets going. Then I will get down to my work, which could be anything from negotiating commercial contracts or due diligence on an M&A deal, to drafting services agreements for a hospitality client or discussing a client's contractual obligations to a supplier. I usually get lunch in our canteen (Cloud 9), which is great, and if the suns out will head out onto the terrace to enjoy some great views of London whilst I eat. I am on the Trainee Council at Taylor Wessing, so part of my day will often be taken up with some related work, which involves planning events for the trainees and vacation scheme students and feeding back any concerns from the trainees to the graduate recruitment partners. I also play for the firm's cricket and football teams, so may have a fixture after work, and volunteer through the firm at a free legal advice clinic about once a month.
What is your current role like?
I am currently a trainee in the Corporate, Commercial and Projects team. The work done by the team is incredibly varied, so as a consequence so is mine. The work done by the team includes hospitality work, energy, private wealth, corporate real estate, healthcare and retail. Tasks I typically carry out include drafting documents and reviewing contracts. I find my role very fulfilling and feel that I am able to make a genuine contribution to the work done by the team. I am also on the Trainee Council and the Diversity and Inclusion Committee, which allow me to contribute to the firm beyond my work as a trainee.
