About the role

This is an exciting and interesting time to join the fast-paced Digital Design and Construction industry with digital technology and processes developing at a fast pace. Twinned with this is the ever-expanding scope of AECOM’s WPP Digital Team, ensuring a variety of roles and experiences for a Graduate.

The AECOM WPP Digital Team provide multi-disciplinary digital (including BIM Management) services to the Water, Power and Ports (WPP) industry. Projects include:

  • New Power tunnels for National Grid
  • New wastewater super sewers for Thames Water
  • New UK defense projects for the MoD
  • Nuclear Decommissioning projects for Sellafield Ltd

An example project is the London Power Tunnels 2 project, a £1 billion, 32km, power tunnel deep under London. AECOM are playing a significant role as the Lead Designer, including BIM Management services. As BIM Manager covering all design disciplines on this complex infrastructure project, AECOM is responsible for ensuring that the latest digital tools are utilised to intelligently link the design of the linear infrastructure with the vertical aspects to allow for accurate and efficient delivery of design drawings, 3D models and associated BIM data. AECOM also advises and supports the main contractor and client on wider digital aspects such as asset tagging and 4D BIM delivery so they can optimise the construction and operation of the asset.

General responsibilities

  • Assign roles and responsibilities to team members on a project.
  • Implement BIM/Information Management Procedures.
  • Coordinate information exchanges to effectively communicate design updates to the team.
  • Support information quality checks and enforce quality assurance procedures.
  • Create workflows and monitor/control progress.
  • Assist with ensuring the security of all digital project information.
  • Prepare and communicate project BIM execution plans and information management plans to deliver the service.
  • Support design teams in establishing and implementing design procedures necessary for successful delivery.

Technical responsibilities

  • Prepare BIM Execution Plans (BEP) for projects.
  • Support implementation/management of BIM during design, construction and handover (level of involvement varies on a project basis).
  • Manage CDEs (Common Data Environments) including ProjectWise and BIM 360.
  • Research and introduce more sophisticated technologies and/or methodologies to improve the efficiency of communication.
  • Contribute to technical project documentation deliverables, taking responsibility of accuracy and flow of content.
  • Assess capability and training needs and proactively implement training and support when required.
  • Contribute to verifying final project information models against the master information delivery plans
  • Provide training and technical support to design staff on the Building Information Modelling system, which provides 3D models using project specifications and content.

Minimum requirements

  • MSc in Building Information Modelling (or equivalent) at an accredited university
  • BSc in the AEC disciplines at an accredited university
  • Able to meet the requirements for Baseline security clearance in the UK
  • Understand quality management systems and knowledge of digital handover process
  • Knowledge of BS/PAS1192/ ISO19650
  • Experience using Revit or Civil 3D, and Navisworks
  • Experience of ProjectWise or BIM 360
  • Willing and able to work towards chartership
  • Good Microsoft Office skills essential such as Word, Excel & PowerPoint
  • Ability to communicate effectively to internal and external clients, both verbally & in writing with the confidence to engage with a variety of people (clients, colleagues, stakeholders and sub-contractors alike) and the aptitude to rationally explain, explore and discuss technical issues and capture feedback
  • Enthusiastic, hard-working, with ambition and drive
  • Ability to structure & prioritise work effectively through close cooperation with the team as a whole
  • Ability to work in a team and independently without losing initiative & focus.
