About the role

We have openings for Rail Telecommunications Engineers to expand our team. Telecoms underpins the working of the operational railway, delivering critical communications for train running including Transmission Networks for Signalling and Voice, Security, Passenger Safety including CCTV, Public Address Systems display of Train Running information that enhances the experience of the travelling public.

Rail Telecoms covers a wide remit and as an Engineer working in Telecoms your role will be varied and will cover all aspects of design. Our national railway is undergoing modernization and you will work with legacy systems as well as applying the latest technology to improve and enhance this critical infrastructure. Your work will include interfaces with other disciplines such as Track (Permanent Way), Signalling, Power and Civil & Structural Engineering. You will gain an understanding of the demanding environment in which railways operate and first-hand experience of the safety culture and best practices which the industry and AECOM encapsulate. You will learn applicable standards how they must be applied, as you develop designs from office-based feasibility studies and trackside surveys through outline solutions up to detailed designs that are ap p roved for construction.

There will be opportunities to work in multi-disciplinary teams to deliver state of the art solutions, and to continue your Professional Development through training and giving back to the community through STEM initiatives and mentoring of Apprentice and other Early Careers staff.

What you'll do

You will be part of a team delivering multi-discipline design solutions and part of a 650 strong railway family at AECOM. Recent project wins included Crossrail, HS2 (London/Birmingham/Manchester),S&C Renewals programme, and a wide ranging portfolio across the UK and internationally. Selected candidates will be enrolled on our Graduate Development Programme and have the opportunity to develop their skills within a supporting environment which encourages challenge and collaborative behaviours.

Candidates will use industry leading computer software and modelling programmes while working on a variety of different projects, You will;

  • Be involved in the design of Telecoms systems across a wide range of technologies
  • Undertake desktop, site and trackside surveys
  • Learn about the critical interfaces with other railway disciplines such as Track, Signalling, Overhead Line and Power Systems
  • Prepare drawings, calculations and reports to support design decisions
  • Learn to apply a variety of International, European, National and Railway Standards
  • Learn how to implement design solutions that minimise the disruption to the operational railway
  • Liaise with the Client to understand their requirements and then design the optimal solution to meet their goals

Minimum requirements

  • BEng Electrical Engineering with a 2:1 classification (or equivalent) or above
  • MEng Electrical Engineering would be an advantage
  • Rail modules or experience of Telecoms/Radio Systems would be an advantage
  • Ability to demonstrate a good technical understanding of Rail/Telecoms principles
  • Demonstrable interest in Rail/Telecoms Engineering and developing a career in this industry
  • Willing and able to work towards chartership with the IET
  • Good Microsoft Office skills essential such as Word, Excel & PowerPoint
  • Ability to communicate effectively to internal and external clients, both verbally & in writing with the confidence to engage with a variety of people (clients, colleagues, stakeholders and sub- contractors alike) and the aptitude to rationally explain, explore and discuss technical issues and capture feedback
  • Enthusiastic, hard-working, with ambition and drive
  • Ability to structure & prioritise work effectively through close cooperation with the team as a whole
  • Ability to work in a team and independently without losing initiative & focus.

Preferred qualifications

  • BEng Electrical Engineering with a 2:1 classification (or equivalent) or above
  • MEng Electrical Engineering would be an advantage
