Then this placement could be for you !

The Materials Laboratory Department at Broughton is in place to provide Specialist Quality Services through investigative work to various departments within Airbus as well as external customers and suppliers, through chemical and metallurgical analysis. Our work helps to ensure the quality, safety and airworthiness of all supplied, subcontracted and manufactured products.

As a placement student within our department, you will have the opportunity to learn how our Metallurgists & Chemists provide support for the overall Airbus production systems.

What will you be doing

You will have your own dedicated tasks to fulfil, supported by the team and the opportunity to see how our analytical techniques aid the production of our products,some examples as below:

Mechanical - Carrying out all testing of mechanical nature - such as the control of heat treatment, tensile mechanical testing and process coupon checks of riveting stacks for countersink gapping.

Chemical - Control of process in Surface Treatment Facilities, chemical analysis and associated performance check of equipment and consumables.

Metallurgical - Investigation of product/material non-conformance including material failures and fractures, approval of specialist manufacturing personnel, and assessment of suppliers' technical capabilities.

During this placement, the activities you may also undertake will include;

  • Carrying out investigations
  • Analysing & reporting findings to the relevant functions
  • Liaising with different functions to ensure amendments are captured,
  • Looking for improvement opportunities,
  • Liaising with suppliers to ensure we have a harmonised approach of processes,
  • Delivering changes / best practices, synergies and promoting business excellence.

Please note our placements are open to Undergraduates only. Therefore it is mandatory for candidates to be an undergraduate for the whole duration of the placement, studying towards a degree in one of the following- Chemistry / Metallurgy / Materials Engineering

Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate the following;

  • Interest in Science/Chemistry
  • Adherence to processes
  • Team working
  • Laboratory experience is preferred
  • Excellent research and presentation skills
  • Knowledge of analytical methods / instruments ie, ICP, IC & XRF techniques.
  • Microsoft/G-suites knowledge: Advanced
  • English: Fluent
