In Arup Acoustics we are responsible for the beautiful sound in concert halls and for controlling vibration in sensitive laboratory environments. We help reduce the impact of noise from airports, railways, highways and stadiums, while making sure sound systems are heard with clarity in even the busiest transport hubs.

Our international acoustics design team provides services in the design of acoustics, noise and vibration for buildings and transportation. Our venue design team leads the operational planning and technical systems design of venues from music to sports. Our industry leading work in the prediction and assessment of noise from new major infrastructure such as HS2 and Heathrow airport has expanded our expertise in modelling and data analysis through to innovative presentation to the public via auralisation and visualisation.

We are currently offering industrial placements for students to join our team of bright professionals in our Leeds office for a period of 11-12 months.

This is an excellent opportunity for a student that is enthusiastic and knowledgeable about Acoustics to experience what we do and help us to deliver effective and professional services for a range of varied and high-profile clients.

Depending on performance, there may be an opportunity to receive a permanent Graduate offer of employment upon completion of your studies.

As part of the acoustics team you will provide support to team members to deliver an effective and professional service to our clients.  Your project involvement will be extremely diverse and may include architectural acoustics; environmental noise and vibration; building services noise and sound systems design.  You will be working across a wide variety of markets which may include performing arts, education, healthcare, commercial, residential, sport, rail, highways, aviation and energy.

Due to the nature of our work you may experience projects including planning and feasibility studies; environmental and health impact assessments; building and/or infrastructure design; noise modelling; on-site measurements; auralisation (including Arup SoundLab) and sound visualisation; as well as many other activities. You will be engaged on a portfolio of projects, working with various different teams and ranging in scale, duration and design stage, providing you with a diverse working environment.

What are we looking for? 

We encourage our Industrial Trainee Acoustics to demonstrate drive and motivation, a willingness to learn about our sector, and a desire to effectively deliver an excellent service to our clients.

Ideally you will have the following qualifications:

  • Working towards a Bachelors degree (or equivalent) in acoustics, environmental science, applied sciences, mathematics, computer science, engineering or physics. Other subjects will be considered if you can demonstrate a strong interest in working and learning further in a technically demanding environment. 
  • Modules such as sound, acoustics, waves, vibrations or digital/coding related modules. 
  • A Level (or equivalent) in maths or a science subject. 

Interest and skills in any of the following would also be useful:

  • Health effects of noise 
  • GIS and/or coding 
  • Sound systems 
  • Sound recording 
  • Signal processing 

To be eligible, you must be studying a degree course that allows you to complete an industrial placement programme.

Arup Industrial placement opportunities typically run for 11-12 months. You must be available to start on the opportunity during Summer 2022 and commit to completing the programme in full.
