Overview of the role

Cities are the places that address global issues, provide the innovations of the future, and fuel the global economy. Arup is at the forefront of thinking on many of the issues that will shape cities' development. We have developed powerful collaborations with some of the leading drivers of city transformation.

The City Economics and Planning team provides strategy, policy, consenting and economic consulting services to high-profile clients on many of the most important issues that are faced by cities. We particularly focus on infrastructure and the built environment, including major housing and transport projects.

With long-standing experience in economics, development and planning, we advise the private, public and third sectors to guide each stage of the development process, and we offer our clients a broad spectrum of consulting services including, but not limited to:

  • Strategic advice on policy, place, and development 
  • Appraisals of individual large-scale transport investments 
  • Business case development for major regeneration programmes 
  • Planning applications and related advice 
  • Planning and related policy and supporting documents 
  • Regeneration and economic development strategies and policies 
  • Business case advice for major regeneration programmes 

Our City Economics and Planning team works collaboratively with specialists from a wide range of backgrounds, including environmental, design, energy, sustainability, legal, costing, engineering and infrastructure to ensure that our advice is pragmatic and delivers value. Many of our projects are boundary pushing and nationally significant.

What are we looking for? 

We're looking for people with a passion for place-making, who are curious, and have personal drive and technical knowhow. If you can combine these skills with an understanding of (or willingness to learn about) economics and planning and a desire to deliver excellent services for clients, we'd like to hear from you.

We're looking for the following qualifications, attributes and skills:

  • Either currently studying or graduated in 2021 with a prediction of, or having already achieved, a 2:1 or higher (or equivalent) in a subject relevant to our work, such as: geography; town, urban, spatial or regional planning; social policy; politics; economics; law; property; real estate; urban design/urbanism; local government; psychology; or environmental sciences  
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; strong numerical skills; ability to analyse data, drawings and maps; and ability to develop research methods and execute research projects 
  • Motivation and passion for a career in planning/economics and the built environment  
  • Strong team working skills  
  • Be planned and organised in your approach to work and meeting deadlines  
  • Be willing to learn and develop as opportunities present themselves  

Arup Summer Internship opportunities typically run for 6-8 weeks. You must be available to start on the opportunity during Summer 2022 and commit to completing the programme in full.
