Industrial placement
Arup
Belfast | London | Newcastle upon Tyne
Engineering, Energy & Infrastructure

Around the globe, Arup's electrical engineers bring specialist expertise to solutions for buildings, transport infrastructure and energy, water and waste utilities. Our comprehensive services include energy audits, demand assessment, supply and system resilience, utilities consultancy and sustainable electrical engineering design. Whether in commercial property, retail, sport, mission-critical facilities, the arts or any market, we meet the creative and commercial demands of designers and developers.

Our electrical specialists work seamlessly with mechanical and environmental services engineers to create complete building services solutions. We also work closely with lighting designers, façade engineers, theatre consultants and museum and gallery designers to realise expressive design ideas. Beyond standard areas of overlap, Arup expects its electrical engineers to become creative partners in the design process. Our collaborative approach is supported by advanced 3D modelling methods, known as building information modelling (BIM), that allow design teams to share an intelligent virtual project prototype.

At Arup, we are leaders rather than followers in technical advances and sustainability. Through in-house research and development, we ensure that clients get the benefit, rather than the risk, of innovation. As new energy ideas such as smart grids emerge, Arup helps clients understand where they are appropriate and viable in their businesses.

The Role

We are currently recruiting for Industrial Trainee Electrical Engineers to join our well-established Building Design teams during their mid-degree for a 11-12 month placement. Industrial Trainees will be working in a multi-disciplinary office, preparing designs in co-ordination with their team as well as external architects, surveyors, contractors and clients for projects across a wide range of markets.

You will provide support to team members to deliver an effective and professional service to our clients. Due to the multi-disciplinary nature of our design teams, you will have the opportunity to work alongside experts in the following fields: Mechanical Engineers, Public Health Engineers, Fire Engineers, Acousticians, Ecologists, Environmental Consultants, Surveyors and Project Managers.

We ask that you are flexible on location as you may at times be required to work from other locations across the UK. This is dependent upon the needs of our clients and business.

Requirements

We encourage our Industrial Trainee Electrical Engineers to demonstrate drive and motivation, a willingness to learn about our sector, and a desire to effectively deliver an excellent service to our clients. As such, we are looking for the following qualifications, skills and attributes in you:

  • Strong A Levels (or equivalent) in Maths and Physics (B grade or higher)
  • Electrical and/or Electronic engineering degree, or any degree with Electrical engineering modules
  • Strong results in Power modules (2:1/60% or higher)
  • Possess a strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • An interest in Autodesk Revit or 3D modelling software is an advantage
  • Be able to analyse data and drawings

What you can expect from us

There are infinite possibilities with Arup. You'll receive an insight of the opportunities that a challenging, fulfilling career provides, and:

  • A competitive salary
  • An interesting and varied workload where you'll make a tangible difference to the world
  • A collaborative, intelligent and friendly team in an excellent working environment
  • A challenging workload that will stretch your mind and make the most of your skills
  • The support you need to develop your skills
