Launch your career with Arup

Arup is an independent firm of designers, planners, engineers, architects, consultants and technical specialists, working across every aspect of today's built environment. Together we help our clients solve their most complex challenges – turning exciting ideas into tangible reality as we strive to find a better way and shape a better world.

Overview of role

As one of the world's leading building and infrastructure design consultancies, we offer clients the innovation and technical know-how to continually deliver their projects on schedule and on budget, but without compromise.

As a leader in geoenvironmental services, Arup is often asked to advise on difficult ground contamination, sensitive environments or ambitious projects.  For more than 30 years Arup has been advising on the successful development of the most challenging sites impacted by a variety of ground risks, including ground and groundwater contamination, the protection of water resources and the environment from all aspects of subsurface contamination.

Our geoenvironmental expertise underpins Arup's engineering and design work on projects from building design to infrastructure for water, energy, mining, rail, highways, aviation, dams and underground spaces, providing sustainable solutions to clients.

Clients, contractors and insurers also turn to Arup for geoenvironmental expert advice in transactions or when things do not go according to plan.

We're looking for graduates to join the Arup ‘North West & Yorkshire' and ‘West' Geo teams, providing solutions for development on brownfield sites and delivering a wide range of other subsurface contamination-related services, such as landfill design and management, groundwater protection, geothermal energy, waste management and minewater remediation projects.

Day-to-day the role will involve: review of reports and data for geoenvironmental desk studies; design of ground investigations and resulting data management; contamination risk assessments and modelling to inform remediation design; use of GIS and other digital tools; attendance on site during investigation or remediation; and writing of reports and communication with clients and regulators.

You'll help us to deliver effective and professional services for a range of varied and high-profile clients. While you'll have responsibility from day one, we'll give you the chance to take on more as you progress and broaden your skills.

We take professional development very seriously with frequent internal seminars and training, and also access to national and international training opportunities, supporting progress to chartered status.  Across Arup we work together to share technical resource to meet project demand and there will also be opportunity to work on projects across the UK and overseas.

What are we looking for?

For this opportunity, we are seeking the following qualifications, skills and attributes

  • Bachelors degree in Geology, Civil Engineering or Environmental Science;
  • Preferably a postgraduate qualification (Masters or PhD) in land contamination, hydrogeology, geochemistry or environmental geoscience;
  • We are particularly interested in numerate candidates with strong digital skills and an interest in using digital tools for data management, presentation and modelling (such as GIS, FME, Python, Leapfrog, strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office);
  • Enthusiasm for a career in geoenvironmental and engineering consultancy;
  • The ability to visualise ground conditions in three dimensions and to communicate complex topics verbally and in writing;
  • The aptitude to work on your own initiative and be proactive, seeking to improve existing ways of working, as well as enjoying working as part of a team;
  • Enthusiasm for working out-of-doors from time to time;
  • Be organised in your approach to work and meeting deadlines and flexible to the needs of the business.

You must be available to start this opportunity in September 2022.
