Today, our Energy Transition team are working on the first generation of commercial fusion power plants, developing new Hydrogen technology to displace carbon-based fuels, and supporting the deployment of large-scale renewable power onto the grid.

Our Energy Transition team is expanding its diverse, creative and highly skilled team to develop the technical solutions that will make net zero a reality. Previous experience in a technical role in the fusion, hydrogen or renewables industry is highly desirable, however, transferable skills from related industries such as civil/ defence nuclear, oil and gas, and other safety critical industries, is valued.

Assystem operates a flexible home and office working policy, with some travel to customer and other Assystem sites.

Main duties

  • Produce engineering calculations and analysis to support design activities.
  • Work with project teams to provide engineering solutions and develop conceptual and detailed designs.
  • Carry out feasibility and manufacturability assessments for novel technologies or materials, both of which are not uncommon in cutting edge projects in Transitional Energy.
  • Present findings internally to Assystem teams and externally to Clients – this will require good communication and presentation skills.
  • Offer solutions to issues as they arise, don’t only report problems for others to solve if you can see a way forward – innovative thinking is highly encouraged at Assystem.
  • Be able to work independently, and under instruction from the Lead Engineer.
  • Work in accordance with the Assystem quality management system.
  • Bring innovation to the calculations to improve quality, cost and delivery.
  • Comply with man-hour budgets for assigned tasks.

About you

Essential skills and capabilities 

  • Minimum 2:1 BEng qualification in Engineering (eg. Mechanical, Aerospace, Nuclear, Civil etc.) or Physics.
  • Excellent understanding of the STEM fundamentals (eg mechanics, fluids etc).
  • Strong interest in transitional energy such as fusion, nuclear, hydrogen and renewables
  • A methodological approach to problems and ability to learn new analytical methods within a time-constrained project environment.
  • Excellent organisational and presentation skills
  • Excellent communication skills, written and oral
  • Able to work in a digital environment TEAMS, MS Office etc.
  • Proactive nature, able to work on own initiative

Desirable skills and capabilities

  • Familiar with simulation software, eg FEA, CFD, MATLAB, MathCAD etc.
  • Interest in the commercial aspects of transitional energy and new technologies
  • Knowledge and/or interest in coding and programming for automation of tasks (e.g. python).
  • Evidence of beginning your journey to Chartership with a relevant accredited body (e.g. IMechE, Nuclear Institute, IET).
