For nearly 70 years, AWE has been at the forefront of nuclear research weapons research and development. Contracted to the MOD, we have a critical mission: to provide the warheads for the UK’s ultimate deterrent – Trident. We also use our unique nuclear skills to provide wider UK government with counter-terrorism and nuclear threat reduction solutions.

It takes a special sort of person to work at AWE. What if that person was you?

The role:

Our mechanical engineers support a wide range of activities: from warhead engineering and nuclear forensics, to building services and processes, facilities, plant, and construction.

As a mechanical engineer on our graduate programme, you’ll have the opportunity to work with leaders and experts across AWE. You’ll be analysing, assessing, testing, underwriting, certifying and maintaining the nuclear warhead – reliably and safely – in support of our mission in national defence and security.

Through learning and applying best practice within a highly regulated environment, you’ll be playing a key role in designing and developing processes and documentation that help to underwrite and certify the nuclear warhead.

You’ll be collaborating with our manufacturing and production teams to support tooling, precision machining, our materials science capability and quality control using the latest engineering techniques – like virtual reality, additive manufacturing and 3D data capture. And you’ll be driving productivity, performance and innovation throughout the lifecycle of the nuclear warhead. You’ll be working with our leading-edge Technology Centres across AWE and our collaborators – key to nuclear warhead assembly, disassembly and verification – supporting engineering trials, radiation physics, hydrodynamics experiments and equipment.

We recruit on a rolling basis which means as soon as our positions have been filled, we close our applications.

Successful candidates must be available to start on the Graduate Programme in September 2021.

What we offer:

AWE offer a competitive salary, market leading contributory pension scheme, generous holiday entitlement, excellent work/life balance including a 9-day working fortnight and flexible working hours (role dependent).  A salary sacrifice benefits scheme is also available. As a Graduate with AWE you will also receive a welcome payment, option of an interest free loan of £1,000 as well as regular Graduate pay reviews and a structured and supported career progression

Candidates must be willing and able to obtain and maintain the necessary security clearance for the role and be willing and able to work in designated areas – if applicable
