Graduate – Safety Engineer
What if you could work on something that you cannot test, but cannot afford to fail? What if your job wasn’t your ordinary 9-5? What if you could work with remarkable people on extraordinary things? What if the end result was something a little bit special? What if your role was mission critical?
For nearly 70 years, AWE has been at the forefront of nuclear research weapons research and development. Contracted to the MOD, we have a critical mission: to provide the warheads for the UK’s ultimate deterrent – Trident. We also use our unique nuclear skills to provide wider UK government with counter-terrorism and nuclear threat reduction solutions.
It takes a special sort of person to work at AWE. What if that person was you?
The role
As a graduate Safety Engineer for nuclear or warhead safety, you will work as part of a team to identify the design, engineering and operational failures that could lead to major hazards. These hazards will then be analyzed to determine their consequences and controls will be identified to prevent and mitigate them. This information will be captured in the appropriate Safety Assessment documentation (e.g. Safety Case or other suitable risk assessment) to demonstrate that the risks associated with an operation or design are ALARP. This work will involve liaising with a diverse group of people at many levels within the company including operators, facility management, scientists, engineers and regulators.
During the role you will join a Warhead or a Nuclear Safety Case assessment team where you will undertake meaningful technical work for the business whilst being appropriately supported. There are opportunities to work across the whole project lifecycle developing your competencies in the safety implications of warhead and facility design and modification.
There are also opportunities to gain an understanding of the interactions that take place with our regulators who ensure that we remain compliant with the various Licensee Conditions placed upon us.
We recruit on a rolling basis which means as soon as our positions have been filled, we close our applications.
Successful candidates must be available to start on the Graduate Programme in September 2021.
