As a graduate you will develop a broad and practical understanding of the aerodynamic and structural engineering challenges and requirements in developing and maintaining fast jet and unmanned systems. Disciplines you’ll cover include structural integration, stress analysis, fatigue and fracture, dynamics, finite element analysis and loads, weights, qualification and certification, build-line, in service, vibration analysis, propulsion integration and stores carriage and release.

What you'll do

The role of Airframe Design Engineer covers multiple different Engineering disciplines, such as Aerodynamics Engineering, Design Engineering and Structural Engineering to give a breadth of experience.

Design Engineers are responsible for producing the physical product definition against a set of system functional requirements from multiple sources. They gain skills and knowledge in areas such as structural, mechanical, electrical and fluid systems to create solutions to satisfy conceptual, preliminary definition, detail design, verification/compliance, build/assembly and in-service support lifecycle phases.

Structural Engineers ensure the airframe is able to carry the loads placed upon it. This is done via structural analysis and testing at various stages of the aircraft lifecycle, including in-service when the aircraft fatigue life is monitored against cleared limits. Structural Engineers are also involved in predicting and monitoring the mass and centre of gravity of the aircraft throughout its lifecycle.

Responsibilities

A Graduate Airframe Design Engineer will undertake a broad range of tasks that allow them to develop knowledge of fast jet and unmanned systems, as well as an understanding of the multi-disciplinary inputs and design principles that contribute to the development of such systems. With model-scale experimentation, computational simulation and engineering expertise all feeding into air vehicle design, the role will be fast-paced and dynamic, and the Engineer will take responsibility for the analysis and maturation of the aircraft design from the perspective of their discipline. Tasks involved could be within the following areas:

  • Aerodynamic Modelling – static and dynamic
  • Dynamic Analysis
  • Flutter Analysis
  • Flight Mechanics and Flight Dynamics – utilising wind tunnel data
  • Flight Control Law Design and Development
  • Stores Release and Jettison
  • Air Vehicle Performance Estimation – CFD and Empirical methods
  • Propulsion Integration – intake and exhaust design using CFD and wind tunnel methods
  • Computer Aided Design and Manufacture
  • Fatigue and Fracture Analysis
  • Stress Analysis
  • Finite Element Modelling
  • Build and In-service Support
  • Mass Prediction and Control
  • Aerodynamic and Structural Testing

As a minimum requirement you’ll need to have obtained, or be predicted to obtain, a 2.2 in your Bachelor’s or Master’s degree
