Baillie Gifford was established as an investment management partnership over 100 years ago. Today, with over 1,200 people based in Edinburgh, and more than 700 clients across the globe, we’re an independent investment management business with over £200 billion under management.

We do much more than just buy shares in companies. We think about a company’s potential to grow significantly in the next five to ten years, which is often influenced by many diverse and conflicting factors. Our work is a million miles from the stereotype of investors who track markets looking for short-term gains. Instead, we focus on developing a deep understanding of the underlying drivers behind potential investments. That means questioning everything that happens around us, and anticipating the consequences of local and global events.

The opportunity

Our Operations teams are often described as the ‘oil in the machine’ and are vital for the smooth running of our entire firm. These teams are responsible for everything from liaising with clients, to reconciling trades and analysing operational risk. This is why we’re offering a wide range of summer placement opportunities, which will help you learn about a particular area of our business, whilst gaining a wider knowledge of the investment management industry.

Whichever area you’re interested in, you’ll benefit from a detailed induction and an individual learning and development plan. This includes both structured training sessions and on-the-job mentoring throughout your time with the firm.  Students are also given a Learning Journal to record their experiences and accomplishments, which will help you with applications for future roles.

The placements are as different as the departments are diverse, however each one offers the opportunity to add value to the business and gain a deep understanding of the function.  Each role requires commitment, enthusiasm and the desire to explore the wider opportunities here at Baillie Gifford. This is your opportunity to prove to yourself – and us – what you’re capable of.

Placements last between 8 and 12 weeks, starting on the 16th June 2021. This year we have opportunities available in the following areas:

  • Document Management
  • Client Administration
  • Finance Systems
  • Financial Control & Reporting
  • Group Governance Services
  • HR
  • Legal
  • Performance Analysis.

Requirements

We’re looking for people who are enthusiastic, ambitious and keen to learn about a global investment management business. People who see opportunities where others see challenges. People who turn stumbling blocks into stepping-stones. First-rate communication and organisation skills are also essential, and we’d like to see evidence of this in your application.

For most of the placements, you can be in any year, studying any degree or even have recently graduated. For the Legal placement you will need to be studying for a law degree.
