The Analytical Technologies Group is looking for an engineering intern with strong practical and analytical skills.  Working in the Medical Technology business, you will use your engineering skills at all stages of the development life-cycle.  You will take responsibility for design challenges and technical problems, participating in concept generation, research, design and testing.

Role description

Are you a hard-working, creative, problem solver looking to apply your unique combination of practical and analytical skills to the development of ground-breaking medical devices? This role would suit a bright engineering student who is studying mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering or similar and is interested in joining our Medical Technology business for a year long placement.

You will work within a team of highly talented, multi-disciplinary engineers, with lots of support and guidance on major development projects, applying your practical and analytical abilities to realise novel medical technologies for our clients around the globe. You will participate in projects covering all stages of the development life-cycle, applying novel technologies in the field of medical device development.  You will have the opportunity to create exciting cutting-edge technology in areas such as diagnostics, drug delivery, surgical and acute care, synthetic biology and digital health.

What you'll do

You will be using your strong technical skills to make a significant contribution to development projects, from initial concepts through to final delivery. This will include:

  • Concept generation
  • Analysis and development of engineering designs
  • Rapid Prototyping
  • Design and implementation of test rigs
  • Design and execution of experimental test programmes
  • Presenting results, both internally and to clients
  • Preparing technical reports and producing high-quality documentation

We also typically run a range of development projects staffed by teams of interns, in which you are tasked with developing a selected project proposal as far as possible in 6 months. This will give you the invaluable opportunity to drive the direction of the project, experience key project milestones and present your finished work to the company.

Requirements

Essential 

  • An excellent academic record
  • Studying for a relevant Engineering degree
  • A solid understanding of engineering fundamentals and physical principles
  • A genuine passion for solving problems through engineering
  • A creative approach to problem solving and concept generation
  • Strong technical skills
  • Strong communication skills, verbal and written
  • Good time management

Desirable 

  • Experience of Excel, Word and Powerpoint
  • Experience with Engineering tools such as LabView, Matlab and Simulink and 3D CAD tools, preferably CREO and / or SolidWorks 
  • An appreciation of the use of engineering analysis tools in product development e.g. CFD and FEA.
  • Some relevant industrial experience
  • Good practical skills
  • Interest in biomedical engineering
