Your work will require you to create elegant designs for our clients, from prototyping to final production across a wide range of markets and applications.

Role description

The DfX group is responsible for dynamic hardware development of products, in both high and low volume markets following the guiding principles of Design for “X” (DfX) with particular emphasis on design for manufacture and assembly (DFMA). The group operates from product conception and design all the way through to manufacture and product launch,  often bridging the gap between novel technology and high volume manufacture. Our work spans a range of industry sectors, such as consumer electronic products, energy sensors and metering, sustainability and agricultural systems.

The DfX group is home to some of the most talented and passionate design engineers in the UK, who bring together their collective knowledge and skills to deliver elegant technical solutions. Our projects often involve the development of novel manufacturing techniques and complex supply chain management.

Specific responsibilities

This is an excellent opportunity for a graduate design engineer with the ambition and ability to achieve excellent results within highly demanding industries under tough commercial and time constraints. You will be using your design skills to contribute to product development projects with support and guidance from senior product engineers; from initial idea generation through to the delivery and manufacturing support for market ready products. This may include:

  • Liaising directly with clients to understanding their needs and present designs
  • Taking part in concept generation and problem-solving workshops
  • Preparation of detailed designs in CAD, from system to component level, using design for “X” (DfX) e.g. manufacture, cost, assembly etc best practices
  • Contributing to the development of manufacturing solutions
  • Manufacturing of parts and assemblies, hands-on or by liaising with suppliers
  • Testing of designs to ensure they meet the client’s and end customers’ needs

Requirements

A successful graduate design engineer in the Mechanics and Design Department will have a strong ability to:

  • Communicate with peers and clients to understand their problems and present solutions
  • Design elegant solutions to client’s problems, using DfX best practices
  • Propose high performance manufacturing solutions
  • Obtain and analyse empirical test data to gain insights into design or process performance
