We are looking for a motivated individual to join the Canopius Actuarial Team.  The successful candidate will need to be intellectually inquisitive, personable and capable of working both individually and as part of a team.

They will be exposed to a range of actuarial work, including Reserving, Pricing, Capital and Planning as the business requires. The candidate will be given the opportunity to develop skills quickly on the job, supported by a comprehensive study package.

We can be flexible around start date to align with completion of Undergraduate or Postgraduate studies where applicable.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out data manipulation, reconciliation and analysis.
  • Assist in the maintenance, analysis and use of files required for Actuarial processes such as the quarterly reserving process or capital modelling.
  • Assist with the development and refinement of processes across the Actuarial team.
  • Assist with the management and development of databases using SQL and VBA code.
  • Assist in the development of ad hoc pieces of analysis such as “hot topics” as they arise within the Actuarial function.  More recently hot topics have included analysis around Covid impacts, claims inflation as well as deep dives into key strategic lines of business to help decision making.
  • Building relationships with other departments as necessary such as with underwriters and claims teams.
  • Perform duties in accordance with the applicable Canopius Policies

Skills and experience

  • High level of numeracy with an excellent examination track record.
  • Strong IT skills. PC literate with experience of Microsoft Office, including strong Excel skills, some experience of database application and Visual Basic
  • Strong problem solving skills.  Ability to apply knowledge to suggest solutions to and solve new challenges
  • Strong technical skills and flexibility to apply these skills to a range of areas within the Actuarial team.
  • Ability to work in a team environment including:
    • Ability to work in an organised manner, producing clear documentation and audit trails
    • Ability to recognise the need to seek support appropriately from others in the team
    • Able to prioritise work and assess feasibility of deadlines
  • Ability to build relationships within the Actuarial team and with other teams around the business.

  • Good communication skills (both verbal and written).
  • Highly motivated, enthusiastic and keen to work in a structured working style, both individually and as part of a team.
  • Strong attention to detail and focused on the delivery of high quality work within agreed deadlines – including thorough self-review and error checking.
  • Proactive and able to use own initiative – adaptable / open minded.
