The role involves being exposed to the full range of (re)insurance pricing activities at a major Lloyd’s Managing Agent. This will include finding and analysing data, developing pricing models in Excel and Python and determining rates for a diverse range of commercial insurance and reinsurance products. The role involves working closely with underwriters and there is also the opportunity to work across the functions within the Actuarial team as the business requires.

The right candidate will have excellent mathematical and statistical knowledge and be a confident, engaging communicator, who can convey complex ideas in a concise way to non-specialists.

The role is supported by a full study package for the IFoA fellowship qualification.

Main responsibilities

  • Carry out data manipulation, reconciliation and analysis.
  • Assist in pricing of large and/or complex risks.
  • Assist in the research of key pricing assumptions and market rates.
  • Assist with the development and maintenance of pricing models for London Market (re)insurance business using Python, Excel, VBA, R and SQL.
  • Provide assistance to underwriters in using pricing tools in a personable and professional manner.
  • Assist other teams in the Actuarial Function where resource is required and to help gain a breadth of knowledge and skills.  For example, participate in capital analyses, quarterly reserving and the development of ad hoc analyses.
  • Perform duties in accordance with the applicable Canopius Policies.

Skills and experience

  • High level of numeracy with an excellent examination track record.
  • Ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-specialists.
  • Basic understanding of general insurance with willingness to learn and develop expertise.
  • Experience using statistical modelling techniques.
  • Excel and/or programming skills and a strong desire to develop these further.
  • Strong problem solving skills. Ability to apply existing knowledge to a new problem in order to suggest solutions.
  • Ability to work in a team environment including:
    • Working in an organised manner, producing clear documentation and audit trails.
    • Recognising the need to seek support appropriately from others in the team.
    • ­Prioritising work and assessing feasibility of deadlines.
    • Building relationships within the Actuarial team and with other teams around the business.

  • Highly motivated, enthusiastic and keen to work in a structured working style, both individually and as part of a team.
  • Strong attention to detail and focused on the delivery of high quality work within agreed deadlines – including thorough self-review and error checking.
