A Graduate Engineer is a key position in our organisation with responsibilities to contribute to the design and development of projects and programmes of work whilst undertaking a range of technical aspects required for project delivery including feasibility, preliminary and detailed design under the direction of the Project Manager/Lead Designer using industry standard software such as Autocad and Tekla Structural Designer.

Specifically, we are seeking to strengthen our delivery capacity and require an enthusiastic applicant to progress the design of infrastructure projects. This role also offers clear progression to Senior Technician / Engineer roles and beyond.

You shall contribute to projects effectively and commercially to meet the requirements of the brief, quality standards, health and safety and environmental standards to both national and corporate standards.

Responsibilities

You will be part of an engineering design team preparing feasibility studies, conceptual, preliminary, and detailed design of a range of Infrastructure and highway projects.

You will undertake the feasibility, preliminary and detailed design of highway improvement schemes which involves structures / Bridges / Retaining Walls to DMRB standards using Revit, Tekla, Midas and AutoCAD software including preparation of contract drawings.
You will work in collaboration with other design disciplines in Common Data Environments and acquire the knowledge and practical skills through on-the-job learning. Some of your roles and responsibilities include:

  • Undertake the development of engineering options for a proposal so that full consideration is given to safety, reliability, operational capacity modelling, maintainability, ease of construction, and environmental/whole life issues.
  • Participate in the selection of a single option for development
  • Prepare the full engineering data package required for commencement of the detailed design and participate in answering on-going clarifications/queries as needed.
  • Support in all associated duties and carry out cross discipline engineering checks in association with engineers of other disciplines.
  • Manage the engineering interfaces of allocated proposals with concurrent work in other disciplines.
  • Assist in the preparation of technical outputs to the highest standards in accordance with the Capita’s quality management system
  • Help to develop the production of drawings, reports and specifications

Essential Qualifications/Experience/Skills

  • Engineering degree in a relevant discipline with a grade of 2:1 or higher, Institution of Structural Engineers (CEng IStructE)
  • Desire to work towards chartership for the Institute of Civil Engineers
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate with a variety of audience using different mediums.
  • Able to work as part of a multidisciplinary team comprising planners, designers, engineers and technicians, providing technical guidance to less experienced members of the team.
  • Able to manage your own time to meet project deadlines and budget targets.
  • Proven ability to write accurate, clear, high quality reports in English.
  • Ability to respond to Project Manager and Client requests and meet challenging deadlines.
  • Eligible to work in the UK with a valid work permit if applicable
  • Shall have a sound understanding of the Construction Design and Management (CDM) 2015 Regulations & Common Safety Method (CSM) 2013 Regulations, specifically the designer’s requirements.

Desirable Qualifications/Experience/Skills

  • Have some form of gap year or under-graduate placement work experience within the engineering industry
  • Experience in relevant forms of design software
  • Experience of local authority/Welsh Government/Highways England delivery would be advantageous
  • Knowledge and understanding of the relevant legislation, standards and procedures. A working knowledge of standard highway and civil engineering specifications, conditions of contract and methods of measurement
  • Knowledge of the relevant legislation and guidelines including the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges, British and European Standards, Eurocodes and Codes of Practice
  • Willingness to initiate working improvement and efficiency processes and being part of a team that embraces “change management” to ensure that Capita/Redstart continues to lead Consultancy Services in a demanding arena
  • To demonstrate initiative and ingenuity in solving engineering problems
  • Highly motivated and willing to take on new challenges.
  • UK Driving Licence is desirable
