This award winning internship is available to first-year undergraduates from diverse backgrounds. The 5-day placement in a government department gives you valuable insight and understanding of what it's like to be on the Fast Stream.

If you're interested in a career in the Civil Service, it's an ideal way to learn in a short space of time if we're right for you. It’s also a great foundation for applying to the Summer Diversity Internship Programme (SDIP).

What will you experience?

Early Diversity interns get the unique opportunity to shadow Fast Streamers at work and gain a real insight into their role.

The internship includes:

  • A series of stimulating corporate networking and social events.
  • An assessment survival workshop with all you need to know about applying for graduate vacancies.
  • An allocated Fast Stream buddy.
  • An opening and closing reception attended by high-profile speakers, such as Civil Service diversity champions and inspirational external figures.

Eligibility

You can apply for EDIP if you’re a first-year undergraduate and one or more of the following:

  • From an ethnic minority background.
  • Socially or economically disadvantaged.
  • Consider yourself to have a disability.

Candidates from these ethinic minority backgrounds can apply:

  • Bangladeshi, Indian, Pakistani, Chinese, or any other Asian background
  • African, Caribbean or any other black background
  • White and Asian, white and black African, white and black Caribbean or any other mixed ethnic background
  • Other- Arab

We assess social and economic background using questions based mainly on family background.

As well as meeting the general eligibility requirements we are looking for people who can display the following:

  • A real interest in wanting to pursue a career in the Civil Service.
  • Demonstrable team-working skills.
  • Innovation and creativity.
  • Flexibility in working with people at varying levels.
  • Strong motivation to make an impact on major policy issues or service delivery.

Application process

You’ll take the same initial online tests as all other applicants to the Fast Stream. If you pass, you will complete a short online application form and we'll invite you to take part in a telephone interview.

Telephone interviews take place approximately between November 2021 and January 2022.

You need to be available for the internship in the spring holiday period around April 2022.
