Graduate Civil Structural Engineer 2021
The Costain Graduate Development Scheme is an intensive 2-year programme designed to equip high flying graduates with the skills and experience required to take them forward in their career with the company. Organic rotation opportunities are available after 12 months to another sector and other areas of the business. We offer mentoring and support in every area of work, as well as a structured training programme to enable graduates to work towards achieving their Chartership. Graduates will work on a number of projects around the UK during the 2-year programme, in sectors including nuclear, highways, energy, defence, rail, water, airports and tunnels.
The role
As our Graduate Civil & Structural Engineer you will be responsible for a key element of design work on a project taking a significant role in technical delivery as well as managing aspects of time, cost and quality and will acquire technical, leadership and project management skills and experience.
This will include undertaking the following tasks:
- Preparing engineering design calculations, specifications and reports utilising emerging digital technology and in line with latest codes
- Supporting the successful delivery of design projects in line with the contracted cost and programme
- Communicating with other members of the project team & supply chain, often in a multi-disciplinary environment
- Coordinating the detailing and drawing requirements on the project
- Developing designer’s risk assessmentsIdentifying opportunities to improve the sustainability considerations in our projects including delivering low carbon solutions in our design processes
- Seek to improve existing ways of working, by finding efficiencies in processes and automating design deliverables
- Full engagement with the Costain professional development scheme, to become a chartered Engineer within a 3 – 4 year period
Key Responsibilities
As a Graduate Civil Engineer you will be responsible for a key element of work on a project taking a significant role in technical delivery as well as managing aspects of time, cost and quality and will acquire technical, leadership and project management skills and experience.
This will include undertaking the following tasks:
- Management of site operations, to ensure safety, quality, cost effectiveness, timely production and customer satisfaction
- Planning and sequencing of operations, including writing method statements and risk assessments, and procuring sub-contractor, labour, plant and material resources
- Briefing teamsImplementing operational quality control including setting out and QA processes
- Commercial management
- Design and design management
- Work winning
- Full engagement with the Costain professional development scheme, to become qualified in 3 – 4 year period
About you
- Minimum 1:2 achieved or expected in a Civil or Structural Engineering degree accredited by the ICE or IStructE
- MSc in a Civil or Structural Engineer degree preferred
- Work experience relevant to the Civil & Structural Engineering sector preferred but not essential
- Have experience working with Eurocodes and British Standards
- Understanding of the CDM Regulation
