Graduate job
EDF Energy
London
Engineering, Energy & Infrastructure

As a graduate, you’ll be looking to make an impact – using your skills, knowledge and passion to achieve great things. So how about taking on the challenge of beating climate change?

Being Britain’s biggest generator of low carbon electricity, EDF are not only talking about climate change, we’re doing something about it. We’re committed to reducing carbon emissions to zero, generating power from clean sources like wind, nuclear and solar, leading the charge for electric vehicles and investing in new carbon cutting technologies.

We proudly work together to champion a low carbon lifestyle and collaborate widely in our search for innovations to achieve more.  Build your future with us. Share our vision. Together we’ll help Britain achieve net zero.

The Opportunity

Join us on our Mechanical Engineering Graduate Scheme and be an integral part of our vision to be the efficient, responsible electricity company and a champion of low-carbon growth. You’ll complete a variety of assignments during the 16-month programme within our Nuclear New Build and Generation business areas whilst starting your journey to becoming a Chartered Mechanical Engineer with The Institution of Mechanical Engineers (“IMechE”).

There’s no better time to join the scheme as progress is made on Hinkley Point C, the largest construction project in Europe, and plans to develop a second project at Sizewell C have commenced. We want to share this exciting journey with you as you start your life-long career with EDF Energy shaping the energy industry of the future.

The Training Programme

Following a week-long induction with graduates from all of our schemes at our state of the art facility, Cannington Court (Somerset) in September 2021, you’ll spend the first 3 months of the scheme based at your home location getting to know your new team.

We want to develop you and ensure you have the right skills to do the role required of you so this time will be interspersed with periods of residential training at our training centres near Gloucester and Cannington Court.

The next 8 months of your programme will be spent rotating around some of our existing sites across the UK allowing you to see how our different departments in the Central Technical Organisation and Power Stations collaborate. During the scheme you could find yourself undertaking placements within our Technical, Engineering, Pre-Operations or Commissioning Departments across our Generation and Nuclear Development business units. You won’t be on your own though, you’ll have the support of your line manager, a recent graduate buddy and a Chartered Mechanical Engineer mentor throughout the scheme.

The Future

Within one year of completion of the programme you’ll be applying the skills and knowledge you have gained as you build your career in Mechanical engineering. After two years you should be ready to move into a more technically advanced role and possibly take on some supervisory responsibilities. Five years from completing the programme you could be a technical specialist or manager and be able to apply your experience in numerous areas of EDF Group at home or abroad, not to mention having achieved Chartered Engineer status within the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

The Skills

  • 2:1 Bachelor’s Degree or a 2:2 Postgraduate Degree (obtained or expected) in Mechanical Engineering, Aeronautical/Aerospace Engineering or General Engineering.
  • A genuine interest in nuclear energy, the power generation industry and technology
  • Desire to learn and develop your skills during and after the scheme
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and organisational skills
  • Flexibility to relocate

Compensation & Benefits

  • Starting salary of £27,500 and regular pay reviews
  • 25 days’ annual leave
  • Pension scheme
  • Annual performance bonus
  • Flexible benefits package
  • Wellbeing and support services
  • Relocation support for moving between attachments and into a new role after the programme.
