Our Academic Internships run for between 6-12 weeks starting on either 27 June or 4 July 2022. We’re offering you the opportunity to gain valuable experience whilst complementing your studies and developing both personally and professionally. Our internship programme gives you a comprehensive introduction to everything the Environment Agency does, with the opportunity to spend time with a range of teams or specialise in a particular department.

There are opportunities in the following teams: Partnerships & Strategic Overview (Flood Risk), Asset Performance, Hydrology, Analysis & Reporting, Fisheries Biodiversity & Geomorphology, Environmental Crime, Waste Regulation and many more.
During your Environmental Science placement with us you will gain experience in areas such as:

  • Project management
  • Data management and analysis
  • Regulating the environment (permitting, waste etc)
  • Environmental incident management
  • Insight into multiple areas of the business

The team  

The Environment Agency operates across England and you’d be joining teams based throughout the West Midlands Area (Shrewsbury, Fradley, Tewkesbury, Stafford and Kidderminster). You will have the opportunity to work with multiple teams during your internship and learn from a variety of experienced members of staff across the following departments:

  • Flood & Coastal Risk Management / Operations
  • Water, Land & Biodiversity
  • Regulated Industry
  • Environment, Planning & Engagement

Experience/skills required  

We are looking for applicants who are studying for or who have recently completed a science or civil engineering related degree. You can be at any stage of your degree course but will not have graduated before Summer 2019.

You’ll be comfortable learning from others, but also sharing your own knowledge, ideas and opinions. There will be the opportunity to work with leaders across the area including the Area Leadership Team.
