A mini pupillage at Farrar’s Building offers you an opportunity to gain an impression of the work that we do and the atmosphere in chambers. It is also an opportunity for us to meet you.

We offer mini pupillages of 3 days, which are not formally assessed. They are usually during the Easter and summer university vacations, although they can be arranged at other times. During your time with us you will shadow barristers at court and in chambers. We try to ensure that at least some of your time is spent with the more junior members of chambers in order that you can gain a realistic view of life as a junior tenant. This also provides you with an opportunity to ask any questions you have about a career at the Bar. In past years the experience gained from a mini pupillage with us has typically enhanced a candidate’s application for pupillage at Farrar’s Building.

Applicants for mini pupillage should have begun or completed a course of higher education. We are unable to offer work experience for school children.

Testimonials

“I thoroughly enjoyed my mini-pupillage with Farrar’s. Throughout the week, there was a friendly and inclusive atmosphere. Everyone was accommodating. The experience has provided me with an added sense of motivation to pursue this career in the future.”

Mini Pupil 2016

Vacancies

Ordinarily we consider applications throughout the year at quarterly intervals, being the end of January, April, July and October.  We usually aim to consider all the application received in the final week of each quarter.

On account of the current Covid pandemic and its continuing effect on working practices, mini-pupillages at Farrar’s Building have been suspended since the end of March.  This has regrettably, but necessarily, created a backlog of previously successful applicants who were due to attend for mini-pupillage from March onwards, but have been unable to do so.  Applicants who have already been informed that their application was successful will have their mini-pupillages rearranged at the first available opportunity.

We are actively considering when mini-pupillages can be safely restarted and whether they can, or should, be facilitated through a combination of ‘in person’ and online attendances.

New applicants for mini-pupillage should be aware that, at present, we do not anticipate being able to offer a start date for mini-pupillage before Summer 2021.  This should in no way detract new applicants from applying.  All applications will be responded to when we are in a position to meaningfully indicate when any mini-pupillage is likely to take place, and by what method(s).
