During the internship, you will be supported and given training (laboratory and office practices, where applicable) until confident to work independently - with a focus on GSK health and safety requirements.  You will be enrolled in GSK internal courses to develop your knowledge of company policy and for your personal development including opportunities to attend seminars led by GSK scientists and networking opportunities.

High Throughput Automation Industrial Placement

You will learn how to operate state-of-the-art automated equipment and develop automated workflows to support and accelerate drug development, in close collaboration with customers from various departments. You will work with your GSK supervisor in the planning, design, and execution of lab experiments and be tasked with performing activities autonomously. We will empower you to share data within the team and with external stakeholders

The successful candidate will be excited by the thought of extracting value and information from large datasets, learning to collect and analyse data, and present the findings to internal stakeholders. They would also be interested in gaining hands-on experience on using state of the art automation capabilities and receiving training in key analytical techniques and processes which support the automated workflows.

High motivation and keen interest in analytical chemistry and data science is required skill, as well as passion for technology and innovation. The successful candidate will have good team player abilities and effective communication skills, keen attention to details. Basic coding knowledge (Matlab, Python) is a plus.

Material Scientist – Industrial Placement Student

A successful candidate will join the GSK Materials Science department and work as part of a multifunctional team responsible for identifying key Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API) attributes and translating this knowledge into the design of crystallisation and milling processes that deliver API suitable for formulation.

Responsibilities

  • Design and execute laboratory experiments to produce API with appropriate properties for drug product processing 
  • Perform data management and data interpretation, record results effectively and communicate results in technical reports 
  • Work effectively and collaboratively in multi-disciplinary development teams alongside, Material Scientists, Chemists, Analysts, Engineers, and Formulation scientists  
  • Effectively present data and findings at internal meetings 
  • Be an active contributor to scientific peer discussions  
  • Comply with local safety and quality requirements 

Opportunities

  • A successful candidate will be exposed to a broad range of pharmaceutical Materials Science activities in support of the optimisation of GSK medicines, working alongside team members from other product development disciplines 
  • Learn key pharmaceutical industry skills such as salt / polymorph screening and selection, crystallography, physical properties characterisation, crystallisation and size reduction process development  
  • Receive mentorship from experienced GSK team members to support your role development 
  • Receive training on a wide range of physical and chemical characterisation methods including XRPD, DSC, TGA, Raman, NMR, HPLC, SEM and Light Microscopy 
  • Candidates will become an important part of a pharmaceutical development lab, offering great experience and insight into working in a lab-based role in a pharmaceutical company 

Additional Details

The Assessment Centres for successful applicants are expected to take place in February and March 2022 and the placement will last,  approximately, one year.

Degree requirements

You will have completed a minimum of 2 years of your undergraduate degree; but will not have graduated at the start of your placement. You may be expected to provide evidence from your university to show you will be an undergraduate student for the duration of the placement year and they are supportive of your placement.

Must be undertaking a Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or Pharmaceutical Science related Undergraduate Degree

For Industrial Placements that involve lab-based work, working with human biological samples the student must be Hepatitis B vaccinated to work within these labs. Hepatitis B vaccination is entirely voluntary. If you decide not to be vaccinated, your decision will be fully respected.
