Education required

To apply for this placement, you must be:

  • Currently studying a degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Biostatistics, Computer Science or a science/technology related discipline.

Other requirements

  • You will have completed a minimum of 2 years of your undergraduate degree but will not have graduated at the start of your placement. You must be enrolled at a UK (United Kingdom) or ROI (Republic of Ireland) University for the duration of your placement.
  • If you have already graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree and are currently studying a postgraduate Masters, you are not eligible for this programme.

Role 1: Business Excellence Analyst

Role location

Overview of the department

Business Excellence & Analytics team's (BEAT) remit is divided within the following areas of expertise:

  • Performance and Capacity - Provide metrics to help management teams drive change across Biostatistic's processes and staff resourcing requirements.
  • Third-Party Vendor Excellence - Manage strategy for working with third-party vendors, the colleagues we bring in to work alongside our in-house Biostatistics experts.
  • Capability Development - Work in partnership with the business to ensure skills needed by Biostatistics are introduced and embedded throughout the organisation.
  • Randomisation Strategy - Responsible for the centralised elements of the Biostatistics randomisation capabilkity.
  • Quality, Risk Management, Audit and Governance - Provde harmonised governance and risk management to ensure quality against our controlled processes.

Key placement activities

  • As a Business Excellence Analyst at GSK, under the guidance of experienced professionals, you will gain valuable experience and play a critical role in supporting our Biostatistics department.
  • Support Biostatistics Effectiveness & Analytics Team (BEAT), by developing and maintaining tools and dashboards that facilitate decision making, enable GSK compliance and accelerate pipeline delivery.
  • Contribute to the improvement of practices/processes for compliance and oversight.
  • Contribute to the implementation of strategic relationship-level standards, processes and capability developments with both internal and external partners.
  • Contribute to Biostatistics operational effectiveness or strategic business initiatives.
  • Contribute to projects that involve managing stakeholders, communication and change management.
  • This placement will provide you with an opportunity to develop your ability to lead, work in matrix teams and enhance your agility skills by working across BEAT's areas of expertise, in addition to gaining exposure to industry-standard tools (such as PowerBI, SAS, R, Sharepoint, Excel etc), methodologies, and regulatory requirements. You will also have the opportunity to gain insight into cutting-edge Clinical Research and the Development Processes within the Pharmaceutical Industry.

Role 2: Data Science Programmer/Analyst

Role location

  • GSK HQ London, Stevenage

Overview of the department

Clinical Programming play a critical role within the Biostatistics department. We support clinical research teams by performing programming and validation of datasets and outputs for the analysis and reporting of clinical trial data. Meanwhile ensuring data quality, accuracy and adherence to data standards and regulatory requirements. Clinical Programming collaborate closely with cross-functional teams such as Statistics, Data Management and Clinical teams to ensure data is fit for purpose and meets requirements for study analysis and reporting.

This placement year will provide you with exposure to industry-standard tools, methodologies, and regulatory requirements while contributing to the advancement of life-changing therapies. You will gain an insight into cutting-edge clinical research and the development processes, with the opportunity to learn from and network with experienced professionals within GSK.

Key placement activities

  • Collaborate with statisticians and fellow professional programmers as part of a study team to develop datasets, tables, listings and figures to aid clinical trial reporting.
  • Participate in programming activities for clinical trial reporting using SAS and/or R programming languages, whilst adhering to data standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Conduct quality control checks on clinical trial data and outputs, identifying and resolving discrepancies or issues where possible and flagging data issues to necessary stakeholders.
  • Assist in the preparation of standard documentation, including dataset specifications and reviewer guides.
  • Opportunities to be involved in and contribute to other non-project initiatives within GSK, contributing towards development of the Biostatistics department.
  • Gaining proficiency in programming languages such as SAS and/or R by developing programs to produce and validate datasets and outputs for clinical trial reporting.
  • Developing an understanding of regulatory requirements and clinical data standards (e.g., CDISC) for reporting and analysing clinical trial data.
  • Enhancement of problem-solving skills through developing and debugging programming code and pro-actively identifying errors/data issues through production and quality control of datasets, tables, listings and figures.
  • Developing effective communication skills through close collaboration with professional Clinical Programmers and Statisticians within the Biostatistics department. Students may also have opportunities to liaise with wider stakeholders such as Data Management and Clinical teams, with the ability to discuss programming concepts to non-programming colleagues.

Role 3: Biostatistics

Role location

  • GSK HQ London, Stevenage or Ware R&D

Overview of the department

Our Biostatistics department contributes throughout drug development and supply, supporting scientists and clinicians in the areas of medicine discovery, design and analysis of clinical trials, as well as non-clinical activities ensuring the quality and safety of products delivered to patients. We do this by providing statistical advice on the experimental design of studies or clinical trial design (e.g. sample size, randomisation scheme etc.), performing statistical analysis and interpretation of results, providing quantitative support to translational medicine practice, and supporting Chemistry, Manufacturing and Controls (CMC)and product transition to Global Supply Chain.

Key placement activities

  • Work in close consultation with professional statisticians to advise on experimental design of studies or clinical trial design (e.g. sample size, randomisation scheme etc.), build translational models to quantify the relationship between endpoints, or to support the Chemistry Manufacturing and Controls (CMC) of GSK R&D and product transition to Global Supply Chain.
  • Work with cross-functional teams to translate scientific or clinical problems into statistical ones
  • Provide statistical support to clients in clinical, clinical biomarkers, or Chemistry Manufacturing and Controls (CMC) groups
  • Understand the background and statistical methods important for drug development
  • Analysis and reporting of data including visual presentations and interpretation
  • Use appropriate statistical methodology and software to carry out the above duties
  • Become proficient in statistical programming or software, such as SAS, R, Statistica or Design Expert
  • Learn the theory of new statistical methodology and how to apply it by attending training courses and collaborating with highly skilled statisticians. Some of these non-clinical methodologies are generally not taught in modern statistics courses (Design of Experiments/Statistical Process Control). Access to various internal trainings on advanced statistical topics including Quantitative Decision Making, Bayesian Dynamic Borrowing, Dose Response Modelling, etc.
  • Gain industry knowledge in potentially a wide range of therapeutic areas, overseeing short-term or long-term projects that cover multiple GSK drugs
  • Get exposure to drug discovery and development process and matrix working environment
  • Partner with senior statisticians in preparing the analysis plan, building the models, QCing the output, compiling and presenting the results to scientists or clinicians
  • Get hands on experiences in doing statistical analyses and modelling in R with advanced methodologies including nonlinear models, statistical learning methods and Bayesian methods
