Job title: Communications intern
Reporting to: Editorial and content officer
Salary: £21,547 per annum plus excellent benefits
Contract type: Fixed term contract for 9 months Hours per week: 37.5 hours per week (we have a hybrid working model in place, which means a mix of working at home and at our office in central London)

We are an independent charity committed to bringing about better health and health care for people in the UK. Our aim is a healthier population, supported by high quality health care that can be equitably accessed. We learn what works to make people’s lives healthier and improve the health care system. From giving grants to those working at the front line to carrying out research and policy analysis, we shine a light on how to make successful change happen. We believe good health and health care are key to a flourishing society. Through sharing what we learn, collaborating with others and building people’s skills and knowledge, we aim to make a difference and contribute to a healthier population.

About the team

The communications directorate helps the Health Foundation to communicate about its work in a way that is impactful and influential.

This year our communications intern will be part of the digital and editorial team. This consists of seven people responsible for two main areas:

  • Helping the organisation make the most of digital channels to communicate its work, increase its reach and achieve maximum impact (including managing our website and social media channels and leading on the delivery of data visualisation, video, infographics, animation and our podcast)
  • Leading the production of all Health Foundation publications, long reads and blogs, working with authors to ensure they are high quality, accessible and appropriate for their intended audiences.

The role of communications intern

As the communications intern, you will gain wide-ranging experience across both of the areas above. We will give you the training and support you need to get involved in the dayto-day delivery of our work and support longer term projects.

You will spend around one day a week working with other teams in the communications directorate, including in external affairs, marketing and team enablement. This will allow you to gain broad experience of all aspects of communications, explore your areas of interest and discover what it’s like to work in a busy, high-impact communications team.

This is an entry-level role and we are keen to hear from candidates with a range of different experiences. Above all, we’re looking for someone who is keen to learn about communications, particularly digital and editorial work. There’s also potential to work with a mentor on your personal development during the internship.

Key tasks and responsibilities

  • Learn about how we manage our digital and editorial work, including the tools and processes we use.
  • Participate actively in regular team meetings.
  • Copyedit and proofread blogs and publications.
  • Apply our house style and brand guidelines consistently to all outputs.
  • Help manage, fulfil and track publications orders for stakeholders and events.
  • Update content on our website, including editing colleagues’ work, and support colleagues to use the content management system (CMS).
  • Support social media management, including drafting content, scheduling, monitoring and evaluating engagement.
  • Assist with web development work (with our digital agency), including generating and testing ideas to improve functionality in line with audience feedback.
  • Support with the production and promotion of a range of Health Foundation content, including infographics, data visualisation, videos and our podcast.
  • Help us conduct audience research and put learning into practice to help optimise our content.
  • Contribute to monthly and quarterly reporting processes and discussions.
  • Lead on one or more projects, to align with your specific areas of interest and/or experience.

Wider contribution

As with other staff at the Health Foundation, the communications intern will be expected to contribute to corporate activities and initiatives, such as staff meetings, learning and development programmes and other organisational projects as necessary. You’ll also contribute to the communication team’s ongoing development by actively participating in one or more cross-cutting workstreams.

You’ll aim to embed our key behaviours (commitment to diversity and inclusion, working together, achieving impact, discovering and learning) in all aspects of your day-to-day work.
