The Casualty Exposure Management team drives our risk management strategy in liability lines. The main focus of the team is to measure the size of the bet we take, and communicate the largest risks we run within Casualty. The risks that matter to us continue to emerge and evolve, ranging from AI to climate change litigation. The team are building out a consistent framework to systematically identify, quantify and mitigate liability emanating from these areas.

The internship

During this internship, you’ll research a current affairs topic, understanding how our insurance policies might be exposed to risk in that area and assessing how material this is to us as a business. Your work will drive education and learning of the topic within the team, so that we are able to quantify, manage and mitigate the risk where it exceeds our risk appetite.

Topics that you will research could include liability arising out of climate change, artificial intelligence, and Mycotoxins.

In this internship you’ll get exposure to underwriting and work across several other teams to build a broad understanding of the largest risks we may insure. You will attend conferences or webinars to access external experts working in consultancies and law firms, advising sectors relevant to our portfolio. These insights can be combined with data and analytics to turn qualitative research into quantitative exposure estimates. It’s a great opportunity to delve deep into the risk we run in a particular area and to understand why that really matters.

At the end of your time with us you’ll present your research findings to the Casualty Exposure Management team, having an opportunity to develop your communication and presentation skills.

You’ll be supported throughout, with on-boarding, training and a “buddy” to mentor you through the programme. The role has flexibility to focus on areas that interest you, and we can tailor the internship to meet your needs – coding opportunities for those interested in the analytical side, legal research skills for reviewing our contract wordings, or publishing articles relating to issues impacting insurers and society today.

As a business, we have adopted hybrid working, where we have a combination of time in the office and at home. In this role you can expect to be in the office approx. 2 days per week.

What is needed to excel in this opportunity?

  • Ideally you’ll be studying a research based degree (Journalism, Social Sciences, Law) but analytical disciplines such as Maths, Statistics, Engineering and Sciences will also be considered
  • No prior insurance knowledge is needed but you’ll be curious about insurance and risk and the impact of current affairs on the industry
  • You should be able to thoroughly research a topic, distil the key points and provide insight and analysis relevant for the portfolio we write, and communicate results in a clear, simple way
  • We want candidates with a curious mind and a thirst for knowledge, and a drive to deliver value from their activities
  • Knowledge of Excel is beneficial but not essential

What are the requirements?

Our internships are open to current students in their penultimate year who are planning to return to undergraduate or postgraduate studies following their time with us. In other words, if you are due to graduate from an Undergraduate or Master’s degree in 2023, we want to hear from you.

You’ll be on course for at least a 2:1 degree (or equivalent).

As well as being able to demonstrate strong interpersonal skills, you’ll be good with numbers and able to speak and write fluently in business English.

You must, by the start of the employment, have permission to work in the UK.

The Internship takes place from 4th July to 26th August 2022.

The closing date for applications is 11th February 2022, although opportunities may close earlier if we receive a high volume of applicants – therefore we recommend that you apply as soon as possible.
