Is it for me?

Are you curious, eager to learn and try new things? Can you think on your feet and make quick, intelligent and commercial decisions? Can you combine strong analytical skills with an ability to build solid relationships? Do you have the courage to ask difficult questions and challenge the status quo? If you’re answering yes to these questions, our graduate programme is for you.

Tell me more

On our underwriting graduate programme, you’ll be able to combine your analytical ability with your people skills – a trader at heart, you’ll love building relationships and negotiating a great deal.

You’ll get in-depth experience and broad product knowledge through two insightful and challenging underwriting rotations. Your underwriting rotations could be in any area of the Hiscox UK business, although it is likely that you’ll spend one rotation in the London Professions and Specialty Commercial (London PSC) team. London PSC is Hiscox UK’s largest regional office for commercial business and here you’ll learn to underwrite our range of cover for small businesses, including professional indemnity, commercial property, employers’ liability or cyber and data insurance.

You’re also likely to spend your other underwriting rotation in our Specialty division, which is the home of some of our more specialist business, covering Events, Contingency, Media, Entertainment, Medical Malpractice, Financial Institutions and Cyber.

In both your underwriting rotations, you’ll be given experience of the different types of risks we insure, how we price those risks and under what conditions, as well as developing your relationship management skills through interacting with our brokers.

You’ll also get exposure to the wider Hiscox UK business through a 6 month rotation outside of underwriting, such as Pricing (working out how much we charge for premiums) or Claims. This rotation will challenge you to develop new skills as well as widening your perspective and understanding of the business.

Following your rotations, you’ll settle into an underwriting team, where you will start to prepare for your role as an Underwriter when you finish the scheme, developing specialist experience in your field.

What qualifications do I need?

You’ll have achieved (or be expecting to achieve) at least a 2:1 honours degree in the UK (or international equivalent) in any degree subject.

Any other requirements?

You’ll be able to speak and write fluently in business English, be numerate, and demonstrate strong interpersonal skills.

The successful candidate must, by the start of the employment, have permission to work in the UK.

You’ll be able to join the scheme in September 2022.

The closing date for applications is 31st December 2021, although opportunities may close early if we receive a high volume of applicants – therefore please apply as soon as possible.

At Hiscox we care about our people. We hire the best people for the job and we’re committed to diversity and creating a truly inclusive culture, which we believe drives success.  We have learned over the pandemic that working life doesn’t always have to be in the office, and have introduced hybrid ways of working for our teams, including our Graduates.

We see it as the best of both worlds: structure and sociability on one hand, and independence and flexibility on the other.
