We’re HMGCC, His Majesty's Government Communications Centre. Don’t worry, if you’ve never heard of us, we are used to it! We’re all about exploring the limits of technology and discovering the unexpected. Our systems help protect national security – both at home and overseas.

    The role

As an Electronics Degree Apprentice at HMGCC, you’ll complete an exciting five-year (approximately) programme to earn a Level 6 Embedded Electronics Degree Apprenticeship. Over the course of the scheme, you’ll gain the knowledge needed to design and build electronic products. Plus, you’ll get a paid membership to a professional organisation such as The Institute of Engineering and Technology.

Our apprentices get involved in real projects from the very start. So, while you’ll attend a university campus for learning and qualifications, you'll also get hands-on experience working with our Electronics team. You will be involved in a wide range of tasks, from designing and testing simple single-board computers to developing software-defined radios. Whatever project you’re working on, you’ll contribute to national security as you solve one-of-a-kind problems you won’t find elsewhere.

Once you complete the programme, you'll have a solid foundation to kick-start your career as an Engineer. Depending on what you enjoy, you might design radio systems, single-board computers, data acquisition systems, printed circuit boards, or work on complex electronic circuit troubleshooting - the possibilities are vast. And here's the best bit – your journey doesn’t end with an apprenticeship. Within a few years of graduating, you can expect to become an Incorporated (IEng) and/or Chartered Engineer (CEng). Ultimately, at HMGCC, your career can be as diverse and progressive as you want it to be. And with your skills and determination, you'll prove something's only impossible until it isn't.

    What you need

    • You’ll have (or be predicted to achieve) five GCSEs or equivalent, including Maths and English at Grade 4/C or above. Plus, three A-levels at Grade C or the equivalent including Maths.
    • Alternatively, you’d have equivalent qualifications or experience such as that gained through industrial apprenticeship schemes and BTEC or NVQ Level 3 in a STEM related subject or experience.

Creative, curious, and passionate, you’re always up for trying new things and constantly improving. Whether it's sharing your ideas or absorbing knowledge from others, you're a true team player. And because you recognise the impact of our work, you'll bring integrity and professionalism to the table as we make a national impact together.

    What we offer

Any opportunity this exciting is bound to feel a little daunting. But don’t worry, we’ll support you every step of the way. You'll have a dedicated buddy to guide you, and we'll make sure you gain hands-on experience through mentored work placements and customer projects. These opportunities will complement your classroom training, giving you the practical skills you need to grow.

On top of that, you'll enjoy all the great benefits that everyone who works with us does including 25 days’ annual leave (rising to 30 after 5 years’ service), training and development opportunities, gym access, an excellent paid pension scheme and paid parental and adoption leave. You'll also have access to courses on time management, presenting skills, creative thinking, and more. Each programme is designed to help you make the most of your learning and practical sessions.

When you join us, you’ll be part of a welcoming, inclusive environment where people from a variety of backgrounds, with different perspectives and ideas, come together to develop brilliant solutions. We’re a recognised Disability Confident employer, meaning we’ll provide the support you need to perform at your best. If you have a disability, a long-term health condition or if you’re neurodivergent, we’ll make the reasonable adjustments you need to ensure you feel comfortable at work.
