We are looking for highly-skilled, motivated, and driven students for multiple research internships at the HP Inc. Security Lab in Bristol, UK.  As an intern you will help us advance the state-of-the-art in system security. We’re looking for people to work on a range of topics: from researching cyber-resilient hardware and software security architectures, designing security for next generation cyber-physical infrastructures, to security analytics, machine learning for security, and emerging 3D printing ecosystems.

About us

Our industrial research lab is a unique environment at the intersection between academic research and real-world innovation in partnership with HP global business units. We provide interns with a unique opportunity to learn about the realities of both worlds, and to contribute research that may eventually impact the HP products and solutions used by millions of people across the globe.

We welcome applications from full time students with the relevant skills and experience at Masters and PhD level.

What will you learn

Interns will develop research and engineering skills, applied to significant security challenges.  You will be directly supervised by experienced researchers, and will be an integral, visible and valued member of the Security Lab. You will have the chance to present your work within the lab, may contribute to working papers, and collaborate with our academic and business partners.

What will you work on

The research agenda in the Security Lab is broad, as we are constantly innovating across device security, infrastructure security and security management.  You will work on a specific project in one of the areas described below that is the best match between your skills and interests, and our priorities.

With more computing power moving to the ‘edge’ of the network, endpoint devices are the target of more attacks but also the place where we need to build-in more effective security measures.  We have a deep and diverse research portfolio that pursues security innovation for current and future endpoint devices, from today’s personal systems and printers, to tomorrow’s novel connected devices and even 3D printers.

In the domain of infrastructure security we develop new paradigms for securing the IoT/endpoint device ecosystem.  We focus our work on securing user-to-device authentication, device-to-device communications, and on designing secure provisioning and flexible management architectures that support an increasingly large and diverse number of devices.

In security management, our work addresses the ongoing management of security in device ecosystems, to more effectively detect and remediate threats operationally.  We also operate our own malware lab to perform analysis of malware samples, and to test our design of new detecting techniques.

Skills

We are looking for motivated and driven individuals, who enjoy team work, have an excellent grounding in IT, computer science and engineering – theory and practice, and a keen interest in systems security research.  Your specialist knowledge might include: strong programming skills, hardware and system software architecture, virtualization technologies, some training or experience in security (from system architecture, to networking security, operational security or applied cryptography), networking and distributed system architectures, or machine learning and other analytics techniques.

Make sure you highlight your skills and areas of interest in your CV and covering letter

Thanks for taking the time to review our job.  If you think it is a match to your experience and interests please apply today – we are eager to learn more about you! If you know a friend who may be a fit for the job please refer them.
