The role

This role is a 12-week internship starting in July 2022, based at our laboratories in Cambridge. Our program focuses on meaningful project work, professional and personal development, in addition to providing networking opportunities.

Your Team

Illumina Laboratory Services (ILS) is an exciting and expanding initiative that is applying Illumina’s core sequencing technology to large scale, high through-put (HTP) sequencing projects. The team completed the DNA sequencing for the 100,000 Genomes Project and are now in the next phase delivering whole-genome sequencing into routine healthcare in partnership with Genomics England and the NHS.

The Assay Development team is responsible for bringing new technologies to the lab and a critical aspect of this is ensuring the pipeline we develop meets both evolving customer and regulatory needs. You will work within a passionate team of scientists and engineers to carry out a Proof of Concept (POC) or validation of a new technology we would like to implement in our clinical laboratory. These studies include Design of Experiments, processing of test samples, analysis and drawing conclusions – all within our Quality Management System and Product Development Process. You will work with other members of the Assay Development Team, as well as other cross-functional teams, to provide a recommendation on whether this new technology could benefit the ILS workflow.

Role and Responsibilities

  • As part of the Assay Development team, you will be involved in planning and executing technical and cross-functional activities to drive design changes and evaluate performance of specific products.
  • Hands on experimental design, execution, data analysis and reporting. Summarize results in written and oral reports in conformance with quality system documentation needs.
  • Activities can include DNA quantification, Library preparation and quantification, running of sequencers and running of liquid handler robots.
  • Participating in regular team and cross-functional meetings.

About you

  • Current undergraduate student or recent graduate in molecular biology or related discipline
  • Basic laboratory skills training including: DNA & RNA quantification, dilution & molarity calculations and pipetting skills
  • Excellent attention to details, being able to work in a quality manner, complying will all laboratory guidelines
  • An understanding of basic molecular biology techniques: PCR, Ligation, Use of enzymes
  • Good time management skills, being able to complete tasks successfully within deadlines, to document all work and to present to management
  • Be familiar with Office software: Excel; work; PowerPoint
  • Experience in NGS techniques is desirable

The Selection Process
