Illumina Laboratory Services-UK (ILS-UK) is applying Illumina’s core sequencing technology to large scale, high through-put (HTP) sequencing projects like the Genomics England 100K Genome Project, UK-wide COVID Study and NHS Genomic Medical Service in an ISO 15189:2012 accredited clinical laboratory.

The Process and Equipment Engineering Team is involved with a number of activities that support ILS-UK Laboratory Operations, including determining the capability and dependability of the laboratory equipment and processes to help increase operational efficiency of the genome sequencing workflow.

Within this internship You will be performing such a capability study of one of the clinical laboratory automated steps using state of the art liquid handling robotics or other lab equipment.  This will include performing the laboratory experiments, some analysis on the data and review of the key factors causing any variation leading to suggestions for improvement.  This will all be performed whilst working within an accredited environment within the ILS QMS under the supervision of experienced Illumina process and automated liquid handling experts: full training will be provided.

Role and responsibilities

  • Contribute to the improvement and optimisation of NGS workflow steps through feasibility studies and tests
  • Hands-on modification, testing and validation of automated liquid handling, and other equipment within the clinical laboratories
