We are excited to be looking for a Geotechnical Engineering Apprentice based in Birmingham! You will work towards achieving a Level 7 Degree qualification in Geotechnical Engineering.

About the role

Geotechnical Engineering is the branch of Civil Engineering which focusses on the engineering behaviour of the soils and rocks beneath our feet – Geotechnical Engineering combines Civil Engineering with geology. Most construction projects require Geotechnical Engineering to be undertaken at some point, which means that Geotechnical Engineers play a vital role on a variety of different projects.  Some examples of these projects include highways, railways, tunnelling, bridge foundations and dealing with natural hazards (such as landslides, earthquakes etc.).

Join us and you’ll have the chance to work on world class projects as part of our Tunnelling and Ground Engineering (TGE) team in Birmingham. You will be supported in learning new skills using specialist software, learning design principles and standards and assisting in delivering – and adding value to – our projects. You will be involved in assisting in the development of geotechnical designs, drawings, digital models and calculations and supporting construction and ground investigation site works.

You will work towards achieving a Level 7 Degree Apprenticeship in Geotechnical Engineering through blended learning which generally involves 3 weeks of working and 1 week of study per taught subject during the academic term. You will be enrolled on the MSc Geotechnical Engineering course at the University of Birmingham. Further information about the degree courses is available here:

You will be supported throughout your degree apprenticeship including being assigned a dedicated mentor to help you work towards achieving Chartered  status with either the Institution of Civil Engineers  or the Geological Society

Your Impact

At Jacobs, our Apprenticeships provide an exciting opportunity to ‘earn whilst you learn’, combining practical training in a full-time job with a qualification designed for the industry.

The Geotechnical Engineering Apprentice will play a role in providing technical solutions on projects. They will also work with others within the multi-disciplinary team and assist in the production of designs and associated project work.

Here’s What You’ll Need

  • Achieved a grade C/4 or above in at least 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) including Mathematics and English; AND
  • Achieved at least three A Levels (preferably including Mathematics and Physical or Earth Sciences) at Grades A*-C (or equivalent) OR an approved Level 3 qualification in Civil Engineering
  • Achieved at least an Upper Second Class honours in a civil engineering or geology related undergraduate degree. 

Consideration will also be given to those who do not currently meet the above minimum grades but who are about to undertake exams which could provide the candidate with the required minimum grades.

Desirable Skills & Characteristics

  • Strong numeracy skills
  • Confident communication skills both written and verbal
  • Experience of using Microsoft Office packages; particularly Microsoft Excel and Word
  • An interest in computer aided design using AutoCAD
  • A willingness to learn and develop new skills
  • A willingness to embrace new technology in a digital environment

You should be able to demonstrate that you are

  • A well-mannered and professional individual with a positive ‘can do’ attitude
  • Proactive in nature who takes pride in ‘getting things done’ to a high standard
  • Able to demonstrate a keen interest in a career in Geotechnical Engineering
