About the opportunity

We employ a number of field biologists and ecologists to assist with and undertake data collection and monitoring commitments on projects. We are now looking for under-graduate field scientists to support our project commitments, predominantly on zero hours contracts due to the variable nature of the work. We are looking for candidates across our office locations in; Southampton, Peterborough/Norwich, London, Cardiff, Bristol, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Manchester, Leeds, Winnersh, Worcester, and Birmingham.

We are especially interested in recruiting enthusiastic under-graduates, looking for the opportunity to experience what a potential career in ecological consultancy would be like, who would join us over the summer to support our field delivery across the UK.

Our ecology team is currently over a hundred strong which means technical as well as career mentoring to ensure your continued professional development. At Jacobs we provide the resources to turn great ideas into reality.

Primary responsibilities

  • Supporting the national team of ecologists working on a variety of projects
  • Survey support and logistic planning
  • Ecological surveying and biological data collection
  • Producing quality assured ecology deliverables
  • Report Writing

Our Water and Environment business provides a focus for advising our clients on sustainability issues including renewable energy, low carbon economies, impacts of climate change and waste and resource management. Our environmental capabilities comprise of in excess of 1000 staff based predominantly in the UK, but with reach into the Middle East and in India.

Here's what you'll need

Qualifications – external

  • Currently studying for an honours degree in ecology or related field
  • Some experience in ecology surveys or as a field scientist
  • Capable of managing a challenging workload subject to change at short notice
  • Ability to write clear, concise reports 
  • You must be a good team player with a willingness to work away from your base office.

Ideally, here’s what you’ll also have: 

  • Driving license
  • Relevant undergraduate work placements or volunteering experience
  • Understanding of relevant UK legislation
  • Understanding of GIS or basic ability using ArcGIS

Additional information

We are looking for candidates to register their interest with Jacobs, with a CV and Cover Letter, before the end of the year. The interview and selection process will run throughout December and January, with start dates anticipated in March.
