Your impact

Jacobs has a long history in the field of water engineering and our process engineers undertake water and wastewater treatment design from feasibility stage through detailed design, construction and commissioning. Our services range from the scoping and analysis of potential developments in water and wastewater infrastructure, through construction, commissioning and operation of projects all over the world.

Our Process Discipline team within our Water Business deliver Client solutions across the UK and Ireland water sectors as well as in European and global markets. Our mission is to provide connected, sustainable, innovative water solutions to realise multiple benefits in the face of the increasing challenges posed by climate crisis and population growth this all needs to be delivered within our BeyondZero safety culture.

What you’ll be doing

We are looking for talented Graduate Process Safety Engineers to get involved in a range of interesting and challenging projects across all stages of the urban water cycle. Particular industry focus for ongoing and upcoming work, and topics we are passionate about, include a just, inclusive, Green Recovery, wider benefits throughout the water cycle through implementing Circular Economy, Hydrogen Economy and the UK Water Industry’s Net Zero Carbon commitment in response to the Climate Crisis and in that regard is critical to embed process safety into the design of new assets and maintain the process safety of existing assets and using process safety techniques to ensure high quality water.

As a member of the Europe Water Process team, you would be supported by and work as part of our diverse and dynamic team based in the UK and within our Global Solutions and Technology group in ensuring the Process Safety of our designs. You would be supported by our regional European Water and Wastewater leads, Matthew Streeter and Amanda Lake and our global Water and Wastewater leads Russell Ford and Julian Sandino.

Graduate programme

Our programme is recognised as one of the best in our industry and is accredited with several professional science and engineering institutes.

It consists of two years’ development towards chartership, followed be a three-year career development phase. The programme is structured to provide you with the necessary technical skills and business acumen to advance your career. We also welcome applications from mature students with previous relevant experience and would work to support and accelerate your progress through this development phase as appropriate.

For all graduates following our programme, we offer:

  • On-the-job training, with opportunities to develop wider technical and project delivery skills by working alongside experienced professionals
  • A strong mentoring culture, with each graduate assigned a dedicated mentor, a graduate buddy and a line manager/ supervisor to ensure they are supported in their personal and professional development

At least one UK rotation, with opportunities to work on customer sites as well as in our offices

Here’s what you'll need

  • A  Master’s degree in Process Safety. This can be a predicted grade if you are applying in your final year of study.
  • You must have a minimum 2:1 Master’s degree in a Chemical Engineering related discipline.
  • You must be able to demonstrate a passion for your chosen subject that goes beyond the ordinary and have a genuine interest in process safety, water treatment and nuclear energy.
  • You must be prepared to work anywhere in the UK at any point in the scheme, with a number of rotations
  • You must have experience of working in a technical and/or customer facing environment (for example summer job/ placement)
  • You must have the right to work in the UK before you apply for this position. Minimum security checks will need to be satisfied and for some roles additional security clearances will be required.

Ideally, here’s what you’ll also have: 

  • Proven communication skills; both verbally and written
  • Demonstrated a previous interest in working in the Engineering Sector
  • Full driving licence
