Propulsion

Internal combustion engines have dominated automotive propulsion since cars were introduced, but we are re-imagining the future. While continuing to refine the quality of our combustion engines, we are expanding into electrification, catering to the demands of today and of the future.

Within Jaguar Land Rover, our Propulsion engineering teams are responsible for designing and developing the world class engines, transmissions, drivelines and electric motors that provide the driving force behind our vehicles. The scope of the propulsion systems is far reaching and include major commodity groups such as engines, transmissions, drivelines, Electric Drive Units, Energy Storage devices and are complemented by software system integration, calibration and control strategies.

Through your placement you will get to work in one of our Propulsion Engineering or Research teams and develop experience and insight into our Engineering approach.

The Teams

Powertrain Engineering 

Powertrain Engineering covers the design, test, validation and certification of world class propulsion systems aimed at delivering driving experiences to our customers that they love for life. We use state of the art build, test and sign off facilities to provide the power and driving force behind our vehicles – using the combined expertise of our cross functional teams to find the ideal balance between performance, sustainability and refinement.

The following are a few examples of the types of roles you could be doing with the Powertrain pathway:

  • Trans & Driveline Quality Engineer - providing critical support to our Current Quality Team ensuring we focus on the right issues and deliver solution promptly. 
  • Engines Quality Engineer - focus on driving down the number of engine faults our customers encounter and continually work to improve robustness.
  • Battery Integration Engineer - ensuring all areas of the battery are working together to deliver the storage and discharge of energy requirements of the customer.

Research 

Research covers all the different engineering elements that make up the car in the early stages of discovery, feasibility and invention. The source of inspiration for innovation, some of our most advanced, pioneering features start life here. In technology-led future, research will remain a powerful driver, advancing powertrain development, the use of hybrids, electronics and entertainment, and driverless cars.

As an undergraduate in this team, you might get involved in supporting the team to solve difficult scientific and engineering problems, undertaking technical feasibility, building prototypes (both physical and software), and creating proof of concepts. This team drives about 1/3 of new innovation patents for Jaguar Land Rover and is the driving spirit of innovation.

What’s required

Excellence runs throughout our entire business, and we expect you to be the same. So, as well as working towards a degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, Chemical, Systems or Mechatronics at 2:2 level or higher, you’ll need drive, creativity, a keen eye for detail, and a never-ending commitment to delivering results.

Please be aware that our undergraduate placement opportunities are only open to penultimate year students (i.e., students who will be returning to their final year of study following their placement with us).

All our undergraduate programmes have a fixed start date commencing June 20th 2022 and will run for a duration of 12 months.
